Tillery was another DJ Fluker desperation reach at a position of need. The pre-draft ratings were on the wall, but we had pick #28 and needed defensive line. We could have had DK Metcalf or Deebo Samuel but we already had Mike Williams. BTW... Tillery signed with the Bears. Always take talent before need, especially in round one. I do not remember who I preferred, but it wasn't Deebo. I know I liked DK, but not sure if I was beating the drum for him pre draft. Tillery pick came out of nowhere for me.....I saw the logic in the pick, but Tillery was not remotely close to BPA, hence not a chance I would have picked him. TT and group let need influence pick far too much in my view, one of the things I dislike about TT's drafting style. Give me talent.....if it doesn't work out, I can always trade talent. Interesting he went to the Bears.....be even more interesting to see how he does. Was it scheme fit, was it coaching, was it the player.....

No, it really is not difficult to see this decision coming. Club declined the 5th year option, signed several FA's for DL, the writing was in big red lettering. Tillery complaining definitely made it a chemistry issue, and coming from a player on the way out of the organization, easy decision. In the critical review, where was the mistake made?
Scouting.....too high of a grade? Drafting.....the talent was a poor fit for scheme? Asset management......coaching failed the player? Player......? The Chargers are famous for drafting high character guys. You want to scout their behavior and attitude as well. I think one slipped between the cracks here................ I can assure you off ice is looked at far more than most realize. I remember telling young players I scouted that they were always being watched....always.

TT has far too many of this kind of projection/development/need picks with better talent left on the board. I’m not sure how much influence the coaches have on pushing for need over their scouting reports (but given what we know I have to think there is real and substantial input there). For that matter, we don’t know if John Spanos is steering it and if so, to what degree, but I think one has to assume he does. In any case, the talent acquisition hasn’t been good enough or consistent enough.
