Once a certain amount has been banked, there is a large percentage of players that prioritize other aspects over money. At least I can comfortably say that about NHL, and just suspect it about all other professional athletes. You apparently haven't kept up with the 10 year old news that 78% of NFL players are bankrupt or under financial stress within 2 years after retirement... NBA's not quite so bad. 60% are bankrupt in 5 years. Haven't seen anything comparable reported about the NHL. While your suspicion seems perfectly rational to me, the presented statistics do not support it. Within two years, that is simply stunning. Does the NFL not teach the rookies about money management? Even five years is crazy. What it really is, it is sad. I know 20 year veterans from NHL that still have money from first contract. Best advice I ever heard on this went something like this: When you were riding buses all over for games, just barely getting by, did you buy rounds at the brasserie, buy dinners for all, buy friends new cars.....the answer is no, you did not. That needs to stay the same when you make it to NHL.

Proverbs 6:6-8. Speaks to saving up for when times are lean. I guess for most, they get pounded on by needy family members, make bad investments, or simply cannot find work. I'm sure there is a lack of education in there too. I wonder how much is from brain damage?
Proverbs 6. 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

Yes these players get hounded for things, and having boundaries is as important as being comfortable with saying no.

And now the Eli era in NY appears to be over Saves him the humiliation (at least temporarily) of dropping below .500 as an NFL starter.

And in Carolina: Tuesday, Sep 17, 2019 11:18 AM Cam Newton not at Tuesday's practice CHARLOTTE -- When the practice gates closed Tuesday, quarterback Cam Newton was not on the field with his teammates. After falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, the Panthers are beginning preparations for Sunday's game at the Arizona Cardinals in search of their first win of the season. Newton went 25-of-51 for 333 passing yards against the Bucs. He was sacked three times and rushed twice for zero yards while also losing a fumble. Head coach Ron Rivera will address the media later today around 2:30 p.m. www.panthers.com/news/cam-newton-not-at-tuesday-s-practice-panthers

Steelers trade for Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Miami gets 2020 first round pick, 2020 fifth round pick, 2021 sixth round pick Slightly misleading about the fifth and sixth because Miami is sending Pitt their 6th and 7th to offset those, in reality it's pretty much just the 1st round pick and then they get to pick a few spots higher in the 6th and 7th

Miami is tooling up for a lot of draft picks in upper rounds for the next 3 years. Draft picks become rookies. Not a great percentage of rookies become reliable NFL players and even fewer become impact players. Those that do become reliable players often take a few years to get to that level.
Tanking works better in the NBA when you only have 5 players on the court and 1 guy can make a huge difference. Not so well in the NFL.
The Browns have had amazing draft picks for years. They haven't made the play-offs in 17 years or so. This year, they are hyped as much as they have ever been. We'll see what it yields. But it's been plenty of years of futility. Is that what the Dolphins want? Do they think they can somehow out-pick the average by enough to reverse their fortunes in a year or two?

They have about 125 million in cap space to go with all of those picks.
