Am I the only one who thinks Herbert should NOT start this year and enjoy a season of soaking up coaching, mentorship and improving all those flaws we heard about pre-draft? The strategy of a QB getting a first year to learn and develop is the best rationale I have for getting Herbert at pick six over an immediate contributor. Of course, if the QBs ahead of him on the depth chart get injured and he's pressed into service that's a necessity unrelated to strategy. The other scenario where Herbert could/should start is in the second half of the season IF we've lost a ton of the early games. I truly don't see this happening. It could, but I think the Chargers are a competitive team even with Tyrod as our starting QB. I think we'll win more games than we lose, and our losses will be close games- as always! So while injuries or a losing season could happen, I think Herbert should not take the reins just yet and forego the added pressure of playing and winning. MODERN NFL. Guys play. You have to help me with the recent rookies playing: Murray, Mayfield, Darnold, Josh Allen, Daniel Jones, Gardner Minshew, again---help me fill in the rest. Really, only Rosen got 6 games and was shipped to Miami. But even HE got 6 games in. No. This isn't your grandpa's NFL. Nowadays, they play. Millions of dollars in play. Tickets to sell. They want to know NOW what they are dealing with. REACT IN FEAR AS MY CONTRARIAN VIEWS COME TO LIFE BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES !!!!!

Mahomes is the only recent anomaly the the current trend. With the rookie pay cap it is an enormous advantage to the rest of your team if your QB can ball out on his rookie deal. When the Seahawks won RW was on his rookie deal, same for Mahomes and the Chiefs.

I'm not in a hurry to see him start.

Doesn’t work unless you have the same team, coaching staff, and most of all, Mahommes. With this weird, covidy offseason, you’ll probably get your wish though.

Murray was average to below average Jones was average to below average Mayfield and Darnold were trash Allen was a pleasant surprise but still made rookie mistakes... the playoff game was horrible Minshew only got playing time because of Foles injury
Rosen and Turbisky are obvious reasons for properly grooming your young QB before thrusting him in the limelight.
I think you take a 50/50 chance and it depends on the QB, and how mature/ready they are plus the system they came from.
Lynn would be wise to let his future QB absorb the NFL game from the bench and let TT start until he is truly ready... TT is capable, we don't HAVE to start Herbert now like alot of other teams are forced to do.

This was his worst game passing last year in the Rose Bowl it was his ability to run not pass that won that bowl game. Coaches will need to work a lot with him.
I truly think it will be at least a half of the year before he appears in a regular season game barring an injury to Tyrod

Sure, if we all want to get creamy, glue big butterfly wings on ourselves, and tippy toe prance around. I mean, I'm doing it right now, doesn't mean its for everyone.

Does below average always win you Rookie of the Year I like how you ignore the rest of the post... Murray took the Cardinals to a 5-11 record with a total QBR of 55.7 which is "average" Josh Jacobs should have got it... The overall rookie candidate list wasn't very exciting. By your logic the Pro Bowl actually means something other than being a popularity contest...

I don't agree with your evals, but the topic isn't about ratings. Its about the wave of rookies that started. Its not like it used to be. The great Aaron Rodgers just had Jordan Love drafted in the first round by the Packers. He's pissed. There are reasons for his anger.......................spooky scared. Now that situation is different in that Rodgers is obviously their starter. For now. Do see how even THAT situation gets edgy ?? 1st Round QB's are serious business. They are no longer there to ride the pine for years. Something will give inside of two years there. You want REAL Freak talk ?? If Herbert fails, and Love does good. I can literally see Rodgers be a Charger in two seasons. HOW'S THAT FOR FREAK TALK ??
