Coach Anthony Lynn acknowledges Colin Kaepernick is on the Chargers’ radar
By Jeff Miller Los Angeles Times (TNS) Jun 17, 2020 Updated Jun 17, 2020 0
Los Angeles Times
The Chargers plan to enter the 2020 season with Tyrod Taylor as their quarterback, but coach Anthony Lynn acknowledged Wednesday that Colin Kaepernick is on the team’s radar.
Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016, when he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said this week that he supports Kaepernick and encouraged a team to sign the former San Francisco 49er.
Lynn said Kaepernick, 32, is “probably on the workout list” for the Chargers in the event they decide to pursue another quarterback.
At the moment Taylor is the starter, with Justin Herbert — the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 draft — and Easton Stick behind him.
“I’m very confident with the three quarterbacks I have,” Lynn said. “But you can never have too many people waiting on the runway.”
Lynn said the team has not been in contact with Kaepernick’s representatives and has no plans to work him out at this time.
He did indicate that could change if the situation at quarterback changes, likely meaning an injury.
After 14 seasons with Philip Rivers as the starter, the Chargers are transitioning to an offense that will employ more mobility at the position, another reason Kaepernick could be an option.
“Colin definitely fits the style of quarterback for the system we’re going to be running,” Lynn said

The sports media has taken this and run with it. However, some important context as Lynn stated during the course of his interview: He talked about COVID-19 potentially hitting a team hard at a position group as an example, and the importance of having an emergency list ready to go to fill a sudden need. In previous years with the offense designed for PR, there was rightly zero interest in Kaepernik for that reason alone. The new offensive scheme does fit Kaep's style, so IMO it's smart to be considering him if a need arises. Daniel Popper wrote an article yesterday evening as the national media was abuzz about Lynn's comments where he analyzed how probable it would be to sign Kaepernick at the present time. Popper placed it at 1%. Other beat writers responded to his tweet with "That high?" and "Did you round up or down?" Of course, that could change in the future depending upon how events go. Here is the in-depth article link (free 90 day subscription to The Athletic is still available): theathletic.com/1878686/2020/06/17/the-truth-about-the-chargers-and-colin-kaepernick/

If Mahomes wanted to kneel, Andy Reid and the whole KC ownership group would be the first ones kneeled down LOL Three olinemen would have to pick Reid up afterwards.
If you have that kind of ability, they won't care if you killed someone. Literally. So where is Kaep's level of play ? He's been out long enough that if there were questions before, they are bigger questions now. Number 2 QB type ? At best ? There are teams that could take him to help their depth chart. I'm not convinced we are one of them. Taylor and Justin will be hustling for the starting job. Now you want to throw Kaep in the mix ? It doesn't make good roster sense to me. I don't give a damn about kneeling, I care about making winning sense. He could replace Stick, that's about it. You could keep him for next year and move on from Taylor.

This reminds me of the Newton working out with TT story... Gets everybody all worked up for nothing.
Kaepernick had his chances to come back but kept wanting to turn everything into a show... His last workout attempt was a joke. We don't need Kaepernick at all, besides that he would want close to if not more than what TT is currently making. Plus Kaepernick has been out of the league how long? How good was he when he left? Yea no... Hard pass. He is DEF better than many backups in the league, but not for the Chargers right now.

Well said. For on the field football reasons alone, I have zero interest in Kap. He was second string in his last year or so when he was on a team. If he wasn't starter-worthy when he was last playing, these last few years away have certainly not upgraded his on-the-field abilities. We also have three- count 'em, three!- QBs already that "fit our system" and are cheap. Two are young and one is destined to be the QB1 for the next iteration of the Chargers. Stick may be destined to QB2 for a long time. We are not QB needy barring two injuries. Why pay- and pay probably a lot more than necessary- for a player we don't need and one who probably isn't any better than most backups in the league at this point? Lastly, and I think others have mentioned this already, but any NFL team will look past a lot of negative baggage if the player's on the field talent is high. For someone to be out of the league for a few years is first and foremostly all about talent or if you will- talent for the asking price (value). And I think Kap has esteemed his value higher than NFL teams have which has led to his unemployment. It's not about drama or protest, it's always about money.

Lynn's comments are what keep GM's up all night...... Concur. Very—strange—messaging that puts the team in between a rock and a hard place. Not ideal. And a bad look for a coach without much success or reason for optimism in a make or break year.

He has no business discussing QB changes on this team IMVHO, talk about the players you have now. This may very well add fuel to a HARDKNOCKS fire... Aren't we on Hardknocks this year? Would be perfect drama for that "show" if you ask me...

And a bad look for a coach without much success or reason for optimism in a make or break year. Heck, Trump said he thinks some team should give Kap a chance. Lynn's message was slim chance with LAC. Possible, not likely.
Lynn has plenty of reason for optimism if he believes in himself. The team is loaded with talent on D, skill positions on O and a revamped OL with two new Pro Bowl vets and a respected vet OL coach. Lynn & his appraisal of Taylor, Steichen and Pep Hamilton are the major question marks and to be honest, I think he believes in himself and his choices.
Make or break is fair. Go Bolts!

To be sure, my concern is only as to how he discussed the issue and the specific language he used. I don’t oppose the team working Kap out, or signing him if he is better than other assets and the sign wouldn’t compromise cap position for other needs.

pep hamilton comes pre-appraised and damn sure doesn't need any from 5-11 Lynn.

It just stuns me when a HC goes against this rule.

That is a pretty firm rule, but I have to believe that Lynn has some pretty strong feelings regarding what has become a worldwide movement given that he had gone through the same experiences multiple times while growing up in Texas. He explained the context of the sound bite, but of course that was not any part of what was amplified on any of the sports networks. Now he has to live with it, but it doesn't really matter regarding his job security: that all rests on the W's and L's in 2020.

If he doesn’t understand how the media works he’s not qualified to be the team dog catcher and the comms staff should be fired tonight.
