I appreciate your take and I hope others don't "attack" this take just because they disagree. I am in the opposite camp however, and I wish we would hurry up and sign Herbert to his 50 million dollar per year extension before it increases to 55 or 60! But I would give him the big bucks that the QB market commands (and the RB market does not) because I believe it is the priority position for the entire football team. Meaning, if 21 of the starters were very good but the QB sucks, the team would lose more than it wins. Conversely, a great QB can make up for the rest of team being average. He's worth the money. Pay him and build this team to win with him! That's my point, this team has shown to not be able to do that. They couldn't do it with PR and it will be the same with Herbert. If Staley is such a defensive guru then load up on defensive super stars and roll the dice. By no means do I expect them to trade Herbert btw. Yes, you are correct that historically the Chargers have never put together a team that won it all. I think the 2007 AFC Championship game was our best shot, (even though we actually made it to the 94 Super Bowl). In that 2007 AFCCG, Rivers played on a torn ACL and LT's knee injury kept him off the field. Other Charger stars were injured like Gates, LoNeal and Merriman. We settled for four red zone field goals and lost that game 21-12. I recount all that to point out a few eerily similar factors from then to now- the unfortunate injuries, the lack of a running game needed for balance and red zone success, the play calling miscues, and the head coaching mismatches (it was Norv in his first year vs. Belichick in the AFCCG). Funny how history can repeat itself. But as a fan, I long for the ONE time we break the slump, defy the odds, defeat this curse and claim the glory. If longsuffering will be balanced by joy, we will be ecstatic for life after that!

Growing up in San Diego and being a fan of their teams my entire life has been disappointment on top of disappointment. Living in between Athens and Atlanta the last 18 years was more of the same (without the ocean and great weather). I've never adopted the Hawks or the Falcons, even though my house is 3 miles from the Falcons' training facility. The Dawgs are my college team and the Braves are my baseball team (along with the Pads). Those two teams have won 3 titles in the last 18 months. Really the first ones that I got to enjoy as a fan. I would love to see the Bolts and Padres get their but it doesn't cause me the level of bitterness that it does with some other fans.

I introduce you to the 2000 Ravens. The Ravens won their first Super Bowl title in a 34–7 blowout, which saw Dilfer complete 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown. Although one of Dilfer's passes was intercepted by linebacker Jessie Armstead and returned for a touchdown, the play was negated due to a holding penalty against the Giants The League is so different now.
And that is why trading Herbert would be idiotic.
The league favors a potent passing attack and lock down run defense. Pass defense is hit or miss with the rule changes. The 2000 ravens would be an 10 and 7 team at best. and would loose to KC, Bengals and the Bolts. Ed reed, T-Sizzle and Ray Ray would give up so much penalty yards.
Ray would probably also be canceled and banned from the NFL.
This is beyond true looool!

The latest one I can think of might be the Rams. They recently won the SB, and that defense won the game. Is Stafford considered elite ?

That was 5 years ago. And the Giants beat the Patriots with defense. Even tho the Eagles lost this last Super Bowl their defense was outstanding in the playoffs leading up to that game. Tampa Bay beat the chiefs with defense as well

Belichick has never been given credit for his defensive wizardry because he had the GOAT playing QB. I sure hope our defense can turn the corner this year. At least be top flight. I actually REALLY liked our secondary play last year, to keep things more positive.......

So we all agree, trade Herbert and load the defense... Trading Herbert is Freak talk. Moe not wanting to give Herbert his payday is Freak talk. You guys have no idea how lucky we are in having Herbert. It could have been some Zack Wilson or Rosen. We got prime, and we are going to pay prime for it.

There will be more concussions...... My thought is he is out of the game within a few years anyway.

Injuries / concussions aside, Tua has played pretty well the last year or so when he got an offensive minded coach and some special weapons. Maybe if the picks were reversed, Herbert would have been injured in Miami and Tua would be looking great in lightening bolts?

Tua has played well at times, and not so well at times. Tua is just not in the stratosphere that Herbert is.

I think Tua is a product of his offense not vice versa. Having Waddle, Tyreek Hill, and Gesicki can make almost anyone look good. We dodged a bullet, I think Tua would have been a dumpster fire for us.
