From reading the expert opinions on this board, I'm a bit surprised that Mike Williams survived the first round of cuts. Maybe not cut but you gotta wonder about the timing of this hip injury thing. The chargers are loaded at WR now with palmer coming in a polished route runner and the emergence of T-billy, guyton, and now moore. plus kj hill and reed still in development. The chargers can’t keep 8 WRs and if anyone is giving them anything worthwhile why wouldn’t they dump the 15 mil in guaranteed money? All it takes is one team willing to deal for MW and he could easily be somewhere else to start the season. I thought when that story broke last week that the chargers are not pursuing a long term deal with him? I thought that was code speak for other teams to call and check to see if he’s available, wasn’t the timing of that combined with him all of sudden not practicing or scrimmaging with the 49ers sound kind of fishy? It did to me, hopefully that hunch turns out to be true and the chargers move him before the season. I’d hate for one of these young talented affordable guys to become the next wes welker somewhere else

I like MW and hope he plays light's out this season for a new contract, but his production to date is not worth his paycheck nor draft position.

I think it's more he don't want preseason, and the team don't want him in there either. Are we paying too much ? Yes. But the team has decided to give him his year before his big contract. Let him stay healthy, go get some stats, and we can make an offer. Otherwise he hits FA. I still say he will get after it this year, contract year. Allen, Williams, and Palmer are a good 3.

KA is the only one that truly is awesome, then MW has the talent to be awesome but hasn't become so, then the rest are hoping to get in the discussion about awesome but are far too inconsistent still......and while Palmer looks great, he is simply unproven at this point.

So you disagree with Staley? Or maybe he’s comparing the WR group to the RB group The goalie swore all offseason that the WR group was great, just so he could justify 18 offensive linemen. NOW the WR's are bad. I laugh. I see all, and I laugh.

I’m just going off of what everyone that’s been covering training camp and the coaches are saying. Last season I felt tyron and jalen took steps with tyron having the lead you could see glimpses of what’s to come, allen, palmer, t-billy, and guyton by themselves would be a strong group for many nfl teams. then throw in moore, did you see moore’s catches on saturday? kj hill has flashed too and some of us believe reed could become something given the chance. You see unproven and I see a group of guys that have made mike Williams expendable. ALL of those young guys have bought into staley’s new culture, they all work hard like allen, MWs is the one guy that doesn’t belong, he’s been content to get by on natural ability and draft status but that’s not good enough on this team anymore. The standards and expectations have gone way up for charger WRs. It’s going to be disappointing if one of these young guys at the bottom of the depth chart gets poached just to keep MWs for another year. Mike is still going to be mike, bad routes inconsistent ability to get open, straight line speed 50/50 ball guy that gets banged up all the time. Palmer is already more of pro and student of the game than williams will ever be, how sad is that?

^^^Another benefit from keeping an extra young guy instead of MWs is that those guys play special teams too. It just makes sense to move on from williams at this time

Staley sings the praises of MW also, so either that is total crap, or it isn't. I guess we will see when the games start to count just who is playing. Staley is in sell mode, and the players are in buy mode......

It’s undeniable that he’s never lived up to his draft status, but most upsetting is the lack of improvement from year to year. Ownership likes mike and telesco drafted him, so it’s understandable staley is going to be PC about the way he talks about MW. He did the same when talking about pipkins earlier in the offseason almost made him sound good when he referred to him as a developing player. We all know pipkins was a bad pick by telesco and pipkins is not going to ‘poof and fairy god mother’ his way into becoming a starting NFL tackle. Every team makes bad selections, it’s impossible not to, but why does it seem like the chargers hold on to bad players longer than most teams, at some point being pragmatic and cutting your losses seems like the prudent thing to do. when staley heaps praise on low draft picks and undrafted rookie free agents he’s not doing to protect anyone’s ego or to be political with the front office, he’s doing it because he’s excited about those players.

"We're gonna throw this shit downfield!" Williams is easily one of our top 5-6 WRs. This isn't a good time to dump talent even if he is overpaid.

I agree with this. The MW ship has sailed for today's date. The Org. made a decision, and now its time to ROLL. With Herbert, Allen, Williams, Palmer, and TE Cook, Ekeler, that was a pretty easy quote for Coach Staley !!!!!!! LMAO !

Everything about your post says MW is a 'bust' and a 'bad' player, but the HC Staley is too smart to say it out loud. Do I have that correct? It seems pretty unfathomable that the club would be willing to pay MW close to 15 million for the season if he is a bust and just plain bad. Perhaps a step back from your emotions, your disappointment in expectations about MW, will help you be more objective in your analysis of his value. * Staley heaps praise on everyone.....right up to when he cuts them. It comes with his job......
