How come they don’t release the protected list every week? I’m still trying to figure out how the raiders nabbed brandon facyson when he was getting protected every week. As for christiansen, I thought he outperformed nieman and abongbemiga in the preseason so with K9 out and tranquill getting hurt, christiansen might be a guy that gets elevated for this next game. Here’s your answer: The NFL also added a new wrinkle to the practice squad that provides teams with some limited protections for keeping practice squad players. Teams can designate four players every week that are protected from being signed by other teams. This protection starts on Tuesday each week, so every practice squad player is still available to be signed to the regular roster of another team after their team’s game that week until the deadline on Tuesday.www.hogshaven.com/2021/8/31/22648441/how-it-works-nfl-practice-squad-rules-eligibility-salary-and-more That’s kind of weird, you can protect them from tuesday thru sunday but then for like 48hrs they’re fair game.

I don’t know about you guys but a little insurance would be nice. I think wagner is still on the street, I know he’s not ideal but I’ll take him over pipkins in a heartbeat.

Sounds like Tranquil is gonna miss some time Torn pectoral? That sounds serious they have to elevate christiansen this weekend, between him and the two rookies (nieman and obongbemiga) he was the more impressive player in preseason.

The NFLPA wants its membership to receive a full gameday paycheck whenever possible, so I'm guessing that the four person protection list was a Covid-compromise to prevent poaching as gameday approaches while still giving the players an opportunity to get paid for a 48-hour period if another team wants them.

It makes a lot of sense from the players point of view. I’m thinking even with all the disfunction at the raiders, facyson is probably exited about making 33k this week vs the 9k he was going to make with the chargers. I guess if you make the protection permanent for the year you’d technically be relegating four practice squad players to make the practice squad minimum for an entire year. Kind of like expanding the roster with 4 guys making less than a third minimum salary

The guy on the PS is better than the guys on the roster LOL, christiansen is in his second year and it showed in the preseason. Nieman was a draft pick and ogbongbemiga was a premier UDRFA signing, they weren’t going to cut those guys because they have more long term upside. But right now, right now Christiansen is probably better equipped to contribute in a game experience wise. Christiansen was killing it in preseason and he didn’t make any big mistakes like the ones nieman made that gave san franciscom a cheap touchdown before the 1st have ended in the preseason game. Nieman will get the start for sure, but it’ll be interesting to see if ogbongbemiga will rotate in or if they elevate christiansen and rotate him instead. I haven't been paying attention to see how many of the ILBs they have been activating per game, but going in with just white, ogbongbemiga, and nieman sounds like they’d be kind of thin. especially since those guys will be playing on STs too. My guess would be that christiansen gets activated this week.

He’s a stud on special teams (one of the few on the Chargers roster). That’s why he is active every Sunday.

This is interesting, I hadn’t even considered the possibility of nieman not starting over ogbongbemiga and christiansen. It was my impression that christiansen beat out both of the rookies in the preseason. He was sharp, he played fast so he looked like he had a stronger grasp of the defense, and his tackling was amongst the best on the team, plus he didn’t get bone headed penalties. Nieman and ogbongbemiga making the roster over him is like K9 starting over tranquill, it shouldn’t have happened but it’s draft/GM politics. If they were indeed to start christiansen over the rookies I’m going to be dissapointed if they kick him back to the PS. Because it’s kind of like an admission that he truly is linebacker 3 on the roster. And linebacker 3 should not be sitting on the PS
