DB Deane Leonard, Ole Miss The Calgary native was a first-team All-Canadian in 2019 at the University of Calgary before transferring to Ole Miss of the prestigious Southeastern Conference. He went on to dress for 18 games with the Rebels, recording 62 total tackles, one tackle for loss, 11 pass breakups, and one fumble recovery. The former Dino ran a 4.39 forty-yard dash at the University of Mississippi’s pro day last month in front of 71 scouts representing 31 NFL teams. At six-foot-one and 194 pounds, he’s got a rare combination of length and speed that teams covet at the cornerback position. Leonard reportedly had top 30 visits with the Las Vegas Raiders and Indianapolis Colts, which is a strong indication that he is being considered for the draft. In case there were any doubts, Staley loves DBs and hates LBs. Not a single pick spent on LB which was arguably our weakest position group heading into the draft. Glad they finished the OL but if I’m playing the chargers I’m looking to run the ball, keep it out of Herbert’s hands and dominate the clock. And without that guy in the middle of the defense we won’t be in a good position to stop it. Of course, if everybody throws every down we’re probably set but the Raiders and Broncos are solid running teams. Or, and just hear me out on this... what if our high powered offense builds a lead that the other team HAS to throw to catch up? What if we did it that way instead? Isn’t that always the plan? |

But we did add 2 run stopping D-tackles through Free Agency. Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson. Staley must be high on them (and he coached Joseph day with the Rams). But I agree that I really wanted one of the several "thumper" ILBs that came out in this draft. Yep glad we got those guys. But I’m an old school guy and I can’t recall a truly great defense that didn’t have a truly great LB or two Our 3rd rounder will give Derwin the chance to be like a lber,hopefully |
