IMO, the defensive scheme is too complicated. Every player has to play their assignment to perfection for it to work. Any unpredictable/creative offensive formations (bunch formations or overload formations) seem to give the Fangio/Staley scheme difficulties.
Is the Fangio/Staley defense on the way out? How would you build a defense to defeat the modern, spread offenses?

We don't seem to have good enough talent on defense IMHO. The secondary misses Calahan, we miss Tranquil, Bosa is injury prone and inconsistent, Kendricks is out and ineffective, K9 is inconsistent to average to poor... Mack is old etc etc etc. This defense is just not as good as it was last year. I agree with the simplicity though, maybe if we can ADJUST a little then the offense can outscore whatever we give up in points.
I'm seriously not sold on our chances... We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

We have high priced guys who aren’t delivering results. JCJ, Bosa and Mack in particular. Bosa had a good showing in limited snaps last week but Tuli was really the key. He and Kenneth Murray were our best players on defense.
Yes, we need to simplify and let the front 7 attack freely. We’ve never replaced Jamal Williams in the middle and SJD is not it. The secondary is a dumpster fire and there’s talent there so I blame the coaches. Everyone seems to have figured out the Fangio scheme and the way we play it is certainly not eliminating explosive plays. In fact, we’re the bottom of the league in that category. I’d rather see Derwin playing closer to the box. It’s a waste having him 15-20 yards off the LOS and he hasn’t been good in coverage. We’re woefully shorts on LB’s with Kendricks out and K9 is our only guy. Remains to be seen whether Henley is more than a pre season player.
Against Minn they should blitz more and try to double JJ. If Addison beats us 1-1 so be it

Bosa and Mack are good pass rushers... but are asked to play the run strong first. I think that takes away from their first step as pass rushers. I think bringing Derwin closer to the LOS is very important... almost a LB. Bringing him closer also allows him to blitz from time to time... where he excels. I agree about the LB situation... kind of thin @lb, especially with K9's inconsistency and Kendrick's age/health. I wonder if a 5-1-5 allignment might fit the personnel better. The Georgia Bulldogs run the scheme... and the Baltimore Ravens ran it effectively. matchquarters.substack.com/p/running-a-5-1-bear-front-vs-2-backmgoblog.com/content/neck-sharpies-ravens-5-1-5-defense

Right now that includes Tuli and when he and Bosa were together they were effective. Let’s see if Rumph can join the party. We may have to be 5-1-5 just because we only have 1 LB’er

We may have to be 5-1-5 just because we only have 1 LB’er I'm not sure that Tuli is better than Mack, yet. I think he goes in on obvious pass-rush situations (where he doesn't have to play the run edge). But yeah, with Kendricks and Henley dinged up, K9 seems to be only LB right now. The one thing that going to a 5-man DL does... allows Mack and Bosa to pass-rush while the 3 IDL can provide numbers against the run (which we've already shown improvement). It also allows Matlock and Fox to get on the field more. At this point, I ask myself... is it better to have JT Woods on the field, instead of JCJ...? I wonder if JCJ is healed completely from his meniscus tear? He looks slow and tentative. ASJ and Vato as boundary corners (with safety help)... and JT Woods playing a deep safety role... might be the better strategy. Play 3 safeties (Derwin, JT, and Gilman) and bring Gilman/Derwin closer to the LOS to help rotation coverage to the middle of the field while JT reads help to the side where the WR is a deep threat (Justin Jefferson this week).

We'll see how it goes tomorrow. The positions hurting us right now IMO are K9, JCJ, and Alohi Gilman. K9 in the middle (wearing the green dot) was an improvement last week. JCJ just seems slow and lost. That meniscus tear had to effect his play. Gilman has speed issues. Playing him deep safety isn't ideal... I think he's more effective closer to the LOS. In a 5-1-5 defense, I think Daiyan Henly would be a nice fit as the LB. The last 2 drafts, my preference was @cb. We spent a boat-load of money on JCJ... when we could have drafted Trent McDuffie. Then we drafted no CB's this draft... when we could have had Brian Branch (the perfect CB/S/DB player). We'll probably lose Vato via FA this off-season... and JCJ may never return to form. Hoping/praying that CB and S/DB are on the radar this coming draft.

rotation and fresh legs should help both mack and bosa and get the younger guys to develop more. Their speed makes a difference. LB coverage and pass rush are where we need to improve. Get pressure and reduce the opportunity for the short release.

Thoughts on the defense vs. the Vikings...?
Interesting that JCJ was inactive. Also, I just read that he has a warrant out for arrest...? Missed a court hearing this week...?
I thought Tuli put another good game together. He and Bosa put a lot of pressure on Cousins. The secondary looked better. JT Woods was a step slow on the Jefferson catch... but he looks promising. After I trashed Gilman last week... he created a turnover (should have been 2). I thought SJD had a good day with several pressures. Fox got some pressure, too. K9 with another good showing...?

We are just SO thin at LB. Kendricks was out. Murray starting. Nick Niemann with a ton of snaps. I think he has a head for football, it's his physical part that I do not know (slower than he should be). I cried out all of the offseason for a free safety. Well, here we are and James hurt too. Just need to keep up the team defense. This week was much better defense. Clamp down at home against the raiders !!!!!!!!

K9 and Gilman played great. Niemann has the head for the game but not the body or athleticism. Tuli is the big positive on defense. That kid is wrecking lines and has a motor. He’s made Bosa’s job easy. We found one. Henley didn’t get any run against the Vikes. Kendricks is a ghost. We have 1 nfl LBer at this point so learn to love Murray

The last 2 games, he's shown improvement. I'm really disappointed in Kendricks... I thought he'd be a big improvement in the run stopping department (it's hard to tell vs Miami as they aired it out). His pass defense was not good... along with everyone else. Henley is the guy I want to see. I liked his college tape. He looked promising in pre-season... then got hurt. Of course. I hope he gets on the field soon. Season him for the playoffs...

I'd hate to rely on him vs. the Dolphins in the playoffs.
