Boston is nirvana for a sports fan Now it is, but it always hasn’t been that way. When I was at Cornell from 1978-1981, it was a pretty unique demographic for the student body. Ithaca was about 5 hours from NYC and 5 hours from Boston driving time. By far, the two largest groups were those from NYC/NJ area and those from Boston/NE. Hence, the fan base was pretty equally split between the two. A memory that still sticks with me is the 1978 pennant race between the Yankees & Red Sox, culminating with the one-game playoff. Being an Orioles fan, I didn’t care who won the game, but you want to talk about a spectacle! I sat in the dorm television room with a crowd that was reacting hysterically to every pitch. Sawx fans were pumped until the legend of Bucky “Freakin” Dent was born with his 3 run HR over the Mondter in the 7th. It was deafening when Yaz stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, Sawx trailing by a run, two outs, men on the corners with the Goose on the hill. First pitch, Yaz pops it up in foul territory, Sawx fans are deflated and Yanks fans going ballistic. And despite the success of the Celtics during the 60’s and the Bruins taking the Cup in 1968, Boston fans thereafter adopted a “woe is me” attitude where everybody was supposed to be commiserating with their cursed sports history. It’s because of this attitude when combined with their current arrogance after a 15 year run of unprecedented success that makes them very very obnoxious to me!

Yeah i remember it not always being that way but for the past 20 years it’s been pretty incredible. Do t forget the Celtics in the 80’s with Larry Bird. That was a solid decade of great basketball

It was a very entertaining game. Refs did ok, but missing that slash that broke Bozack's stick was pretty bad. Breaking the stick is pretty much an automatic call, doing in front of your own net while defending....and getting no call....priceless.

I could not disagree more...... This video is not the experience we would like to see, in any arena. They just mimic what happens on the ice Never want to see fighting that involves angry and inebriated individuals, but there is a certain sense of freudenschade that I feel when Boston fans go back to the "woe is me" mode that they expressed over and over again before they experienced a turn of the century run.

Inebriated is the problem in just about all these incidents, and it forces tough choices to be made by organizations. There will come the day that these events are not selling alcohol at all.

That's a tough choice for franchises to make because HD televisions already make it so much easier to enjoy a game at home. Having said that, football is a better sport to watch on television than hockey.

Being at the arena is not just about the actual game, it is much more than that. The interaction with friends, the chirping fans from the opposing team, the energy of the flow in the game, all of which becomes damaged when the inebriated decide to fight. People want to have fun, but they also want a safe environment to do so. The pursuit of that safety is why there are many arenas that stop selling alcohol at the start of the 3rd period.... I get people want to enjoy a beer and some food, but when it becomes all about getting trashed, it is a problem. Thankfully, not a big one yet. I watch so many games on the screen, I have no perspective about the difficulties of watching the game on a screen. I know it is a challenge, but the NHL has improved greatly in how they produce the coverage. Suffice to say they (in person or watching on a screen) both bring very different experiences, and I do enjoy both.
