Guyton's strength is more of a stretch the field while Palmer is running routes. I see them as #3a & #3b. Who gets the call is more game play specific. I do think Palmer has more talent and will be a charger for a long time. So far none of the receivers can get open deep, mid or short. The Chargers passing attack was NFL #2 last year. Practicing against our 2022 defense will make them #1 this year. The secondary looks pretty good so far.

The secondary & d-line should both be markedly improved in 2022.

If you're a season ticket holder, be on the lookout for an email today regarding reserving tickets for the Cowboys joint practices on Wednesday 8/17 and Thursday 8/18. You're allowed to reserve two tickets per Chargers account.
I'm going to the Wednesday 8/17 practice.

Some Day 3 observations from Freak’s least favorite Chargers reporter: Competition heats upThere was a palpable increase in intensity during team drills Friday. This was the most competitive practice so far — after the defense won the first two days rather handily — and the starting offense and defense traded blows in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills. Coach Brandon Staley folded third downs into team drills for the first time this camp, and that was surely a factor in the uptick in competition. As Austin Ekeler said, “Especially on third-down day, the competition is a little higher because we are going to see who is going to be able to make someone miss, who is able to (win) their one-on-ones. That’s where a lot of money is made on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.” Justin Herbert came out firing in the seven-on-seven period. On the opening snap, Donald Parham Jr. was one-on-one with nickel corner Bryce Callahan on a wheel route down the right sideline. Herbert delivered a beautiful pass, and Parham did well to high-point the ball. But he could not secure the catch as Callahan battled back to force the incompletion. From that point on, the practice was energized. On the next play, Herbert unleashed his best throw of camp so far. Keenan Allen ran a post route, and Herbert uncorked a pass that split the two safeties — Nasir Adderley and Alohi Gilman — for a long completion. “What happened out there today is our group on offense came out and I thought really delivered in the first team period,” Staley said. “And then what that did for the rest of practice is it set off a bunch of really high-level football on both sides, and that’s what I expect.” The defense responded on third down with tight coverage, forcing Herbert to hold on to the ball. He eventually tried to check down to the left flat, but Kyle Van Noy was there to prevent a completion. The Chargers offense then had two drops on the final two third downs of the period. Ekeler was open on a shallow crosser, but the ball deflected off his hands and fell to the turf. On the next play, Joshua Palmer was open on an over route. Herbert dropped it in a bucket, but Palmer could not make the catch. The back-and-forth continued in the first 11-on-11 period. On the first third down, Mike Williams was matched up with J.C. Jackson on the outside. Williams vs. Jackson has been one of the best battles of training camp so far. Williams ran a short comeback route near the left sideline. Herbert connected with him. But Jackson read the route and stood Williams up right at the first-down marker. The Chargers are not tackling in training camp, so it’s hard to know if this would have been a first down or not. Jackson, for what it’s worth, held his fist in the air to signify fourth down. Later in the period, Herbert scrambled up the middle on a third-and-long. He was touched down short of the stick, but he could have picked up the first down if it had been live action. Herbert is a tough man to bring down in space on initial contact. The offense closed the period with a conversion when Herbert connected with tight end Gerald Everett on an over route. The defense then won the final 11-on-11 third down period. Williams ran a go route down the left sideline, this time with Asante Samuel Jr. in coverage. Samuel was giving up several inches on the towering Williams, but he timed his jump and knocked the ball away. Later in the period, Herbert threw deep down the seam. Callahan leapt and just got his hands to the ball, tipping it into the air. Michael Davis secured the interception. “The intensity today was the highest that it’s been, so that’s good,” Ekeler said. “It means people are starting to understand, it means people are starting to feel like themselves again. And so the competition is rising.” Said Staley: “It was a very, very competitive day on both sides.” theathletic.com/3461652/2022/07/29/chargers-training-camp-mark-webb/?source=user_shared_article

And a little more (perhaps a guy who can fill the vacated Adrian Phillips role):
Mark Webb looking sharp
With Derwin James still sitting out of practice because of his ongoing contract extension negotiations, second-year safety Mark Webb Jr. got an opportunity to work with the first-team defense. According to Staley, Webb is continuing to cross-train at three positions — safety, star (or nickel cornerback) and money (or the safety-linebacker hybrid position in six-DB packages). And he was playing that money role with the first-team defense. He also lined up at safety with the second-team defense.
Webb, who missed the final nine games of his rookie season in 2021 after undergoing knee surgery, is moving well and is consistently in position. Staley specifically mentioned Webb’s football intelligence after Thursday’s practice, and that is showing up in how he fast he is diagnosing what he sees.
Webb made a couple of noteworthy plays.
In the opening 11-on-11 period, Herbert checked down to Palmer in the flat off play action. Webb was step for step with the receiver and was in position to make a would-be tackle for no gain.
In the next period, Webb picked off a Chase Daniel pass. Daniel took a short drop off play action and did not see Webb patrolling the middle of the field.
“He was really playing really well for us before he got hurt last year, and I think he would have played significantly down the stretch for us,” Staley said of Webb, a seventh-round pick last year. “Really excited about his progress. He’s worked really hard to get back and he definitely fits that (hybrid) role. So we’re going to let him compete, and it’s great for him to be able to prove himself and show what he can do. And at the same time, the biggest job description of him is going to be able to tackle, too, and so we haven’t done that just yet, and that’s going to be what he needs to prove in the NFL, because he’s got outstanding skills in the passing game. But he needs to prove himself as a tackler.”
The Chargers lacked dependable depth in the secondary last season. Webb has the versatility to provide that depth at multiple positions in 2022.
