Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Kendrick Norton had to have his left arm amputated after the NFL player was involved in a rollover accident.
Norton, 22, a former star at the University of Miami, was involved in a multiple car accident overnight Thursday and is in critical condition in Miami Jackson Memorial trauma unit, sources told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
His arm had to be amputated by paramedics at the scene in order to free him from the vehicle, per the Sun-Sentinel.
His agent — Malki Kawa of First Round Management — confirmed the grim news via Twitter.
"With sadness, I can confirm that Kendrick Norton was in a car accident last night and suffered multiple injuries, including the amputation of his arm.
“We ask that you continue to pray for him. His family also asks that the public respect Kendrick’s privacy.”
Norton is expected to live.
“We were made aware this morning of a serious car accident involving Kendrick Norton. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kendrick and his family during this time,” a Dolphins spokesman said.
Norton was signed by the Dolphins in December 2018 after spending the bulk of last season on the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers selected the 6-3, 309-pound defender in the 7th round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He did not see action in an NFL game in 2018.
He played three seasons at the University of Miami, starting 25 of 26 games his final two seasons, before making the jump to the NFL. He was expected to compete for a 53-man roster spot with the Dolphins once training camp opened later this month.
“The U family is praying for Kendrick, his family and the medical professionals helping him this morning,” UM head coach Manny Diaz tweeted Thursday morning.
