Why does MLB not allow the metal bats used in the lower levels ? Honest question...... Because you would have deceased pitchers if you put a metal bat in the hands of a major league batter who ropes it back up the middle on a mid-90’s fastball. Zero time to react for the pitcher to defend himself. My ex-brother-in-law (sister’s ex) played baseball with Mark McGuire at USC. He told me that when a pre-steroids version of Mark took batting practice, they put people on the roof of the adjacent parking garage to collect the bombs clanging off of the metal bat.

Beat me to it ! I’ve been watching Cavan all Spring in AAA. He got called up much sooner than I thought, but he was ready. The Blue Jays will be adding Bo Bichette (son of Dante) sometime in the not too distant future as well. He was playing with Cavan in AAA Buffalo this year, but broke his hand a few weeks ago. So within a year or two, we should have three 2nd Generation players in the infield. Roger Clemens son Kacy is in the Blue Jays farm system as well, but he’s still quite a bit away from the Majors... I saw Clemens’ kid pitching for UT at the CWS a couple of years ago. He has talent as well and that would potentially be 3 sons of HOFers on the same team if it weren’t for MLB’s “dirty little secret” from the 80s and 90s.

Add another 15 mph or so for a metal bat. And unlike goalies / goaltenders, pitchers are not in a position where their total focus is being in a position to stop the object. Here’s a look at the Matrix move from earlier this season, and then imagine another 15 mph on it:

There has been talk of trying to take the metal bat out of college baseball, but the cost of constantly replacing broken wooden bats is a significant expense for most college programs. They have changed the material in the bats to “deaden” the impact (i.e. removing titanium and other super hard materials), but it still has far more spring in it than a wooden bat.

You are correct about being focused on stopping the puck, and pretty much protected from being hurt by it, which makes one a tad bit braver. Wood bats it is, and now I know why. Thanks

Did anyone see that Atlanta Braves pitcher get hit in the head? Looked scary, but he seemed to walk off no problem.

Vladdy Jr. destroys a few home run derby records last night.
Round 1, he sets the record for most ever in a round with 29.
Round 2, he breaks the record he just set by 11.
Overall he hits 91, which is 30 more than the previous record !
Oh yeah, and the format for the completion sucks. Forget this head to head bracket & seeding nonsense. Just have the top 4 with the most in round one advance to round two, and the top 2 in round two advance to the finals.

I'd read a lot about Vladdy Jr. over the past couple of years given his lineage and his HOF daddy's Angels years. I was expecting a lot, but Jr. may exceed my lofty expectations. Only 20 years old.

Yep, which is exactly why I say the format sucks, and needs to change. The whole tournament bracket where they are going one on one makes no sense. Alonso only had 14 in round one, which was 3rd lowest overall, but he went “up against” someone who only hit 13 that round. My opinion is Alonso should not have even advanced to round 2. Alonso only had 57 total, to Vladdy’s 91, and he is somehow declared the HR King ? Vladdy set 3 different records, and comes in 2nd place ??Joc Pederson was eliminated in Round 2, because he went “up against” Vladdy, and still had more totals Hr’s than Alonso who hit i all 3 rounds. It should have been those Vladdy/Pederson in the Finals, not Alonso.
