Sunday 12/22/2019 versus the Raiders will be Rivers 223rd consecutive start and 74 consecutive starts behind Brett Favre's all time record of 297 which may be broken in 2024 (including the playoffs it will be Rivers 234th consecutive start which also 2nd all time, and 87 behind Favre's total record of 321).

Am reappearing briefly after a few years on the San Diego Chargers message board, and swearing off after the move. To the extent that I have followed the Chargers in the StubHub / Dignity Health Sports Park era, it was due to Antonio Gates (not brought back this year) and Philip Rivers (probably done with this franchise after the season closer in Kansas City). Rivers was one of these John Hadl types who approached greatness, but did not quite get there. Still, like Stan Humphries (the only starting Chargers quarterback to play in a Super Bowl), Rivers had the heart of a lion. He played a playoff game against New England essentially on one leg. Had it not been for the torn labrum in a meaningless last game of the regular season suffered by Drew Brees, Brees might have delivered a Lombardi Trophy to San Diego rather than New Orleans. However, Brees was dealt away as damaged goods; Rivers gave amazing performances over several years, but the big prize was not to be.
Rivers' departure will mark mine as a Chargers fan; considering I first had awareness of the team about 1969 (as a nine year old) this equates to about a 50 year run, which is not bad. Rivers was not shy about promoting his religious faith, which is o.k. by me. I once went to a home playoff game against Indianapolis in the early 90's in which I drove in early, parked, and with time to kill, walked over to Mission San Diego to attend Mass, did so, and walked back to catch the game. Funny; in many ways I altered my religious schedule to fit it around Chargers games (although I can recall Msgr. Young at St. Rose of Lima commenting from the altar, "O.K. people -- this one is a biggie for the Chargers!", and no doubt a number of parishioners rushed home to catch the game on television).
I took my young son to a few Rivers and Gates Chargers' home games, including one epic won by a score of 34 to 28, or thereabouts, despite Tennessee scoring first on a blocked punt for a safety. Rivers could work some magic with Gates, Keenan Allen, and a few others.
It is my hope that Rivers and Gates will be inducted into the Hall of fame specifically as San Diego Chargers, rather than as L.A. Chargers, the Los Angeles County days being but a fraction of their careers.

Interesting point, that those elected to the Hall of Fame enter as individuals, not as members of a team -- a subtlety that I should have picked up on two tourist visits to Canton, 1998 and 2008. However, context is vitally important -- such as what is said in the plaque underneath the bust of the player. One thing I did notice was that the plaques in 1998 listed the date of birth of the player. All such information had been taken off on my 2008 visit (likely to foil identity theft attempts). By a happy coincidence, my first visit to the Hall of Fame fell on Dan Fouts' birthday.

Sunday 12/29/2019 at the Chiefs will be Rivers 224th consecutive start and 73 consecutive starts behind Brett Favre's all time record of 297 which could be broken in 2024 (including the playoffs it will be Rivers 235th consecutive start which also 2nd all time, and 86 behind Favre's total record of 321).
Might this be Rivers final as a Charger? Ever? I for one hope to see him as the Chargers opening day starting QB in 2020! (and starting QB for the Bolts in the 2021 SB!)

Wow, I guess it could Rivers' last start as a Charger. I'll go on record saying the team brings him back for next year on a two-year deal and that he starts every game of 2020. (But the following year is very iffy!) It is also noteworthy that PR was listed as Questionable earlier this week... maybe the thinking was to sit him for his health or poor performance (both?). Regardless, that streak by Favre is mind boggling! Especially including the playoffs! Which if I'm reading this right, Favre appeared in 24 more playoff games than Rivers? Poor Phil.

He jammed his thumb last game getting slightly in the way of am Oak LB. I doubt he doesn't at least start.

Brett Favre was in 24 playoff games, Rivers in 11. That is why there is a 13 game difference between 73 behind Favre regular season and 86 behind Favre total.

Rivers never saw this coming. The team said they would extend him after this season and he agreed "no problem".
Now look where he's at. He's pissed over it too. "I've never been in this situation before." "There are 32 teams out there."
Its pretty damn tough when you know you are the franchise QB, and now you are in this boat.
He deserves an answer sooner than later. The fanbase deserves an answer sooner than later. We all shouldn't have to wait until mid-March to know.
How will the org. treat the whole situation ?

Rivers is also saying EXACTLY WHAT I TOLD YOU TO DO.
You front load the hell out of a two year contract. My genius is really simple. I keep it simple for all.
"I'm at the 16th hole of an 18 hole golf course."
He is gift wrapping a two year offer to them. Front load a two year deal, and draft our future QB this year.

I'll try not to rant but- We fans get so frustrated at players who put SELF over team and do things like hold out for more money. And rightfully so sometimes (Gordon). But we same fans also are SO QUICK to abandon lifelong Charger players when they decline (Gates, now Rivers). Where's the loyalty? And the Chargers Organization is IDENTICAL to the common fanbase- they assign a dollar amount to a free agent and won't pay a dime over that (which again is sometimes correct, but sometimes isn't so cut and dried- Tyrell Williams?), they tell players "we'll take care of you after the season" but renege on that after some bad performances, and like common fans they are fickle and quick to forget career-long service on and off the field the instant a flashy new upgrade comes into the realm of possibility. Back to Freak's points- I agree that firstly PR deserves an answer, and then we, the longsuffering fanbase, also deserve to see this resolved correctly.

The NFL is a business first and foremost. Fans want a winning product and Championships, the Chargers have none. These players make millions of dollars playing a game and entertaining me, I owe them nothing. I am a Chargers fan first and player fan second... PR does deserve an answer and he deserves to be treated fairly, thats it.

Raiders anyone? Carr sucks. LAS Vegas is a shorter trip that anywhere else.

The season has ended for the Bolts a very short time ago, yet you want the clubs' plan all laid out now....seems premature to me. It is a business, as such, all parts of the equation should be looking out for their own best interests. As players' skills decline, the 'loyalty' aspect matters to the club only from a marketing view. Simply put, the club does not want to 'look bad' when moving on from a long term player.
