Doesn't matter, Brees still kept Rivers watching........must have had more than enough talent. Maybe the Bolts move on from Feeney and he becomes a HOF'r at OG for some other team....... Brees was an INT machine in 2002-'03. We drafted PR in '04 and Brees got Much better. His QBR hit all-time highs. Too bad his rotator cuff was shredded in his throwing arm in '05. He had one of the best returns from injury ever for that inj in a QB. Kudos to Drew. Competition at a position is always good.
The entire 'competition at a position' point of view is completely disingenuous, as there is competition at every position, on every team, every year, all year.

Who do you foresee winning the hotly contested starting QB battles for LAC, LAR, KC, Pats, GB, Seattle, (and 20 more) this year? Clearly there is the incumbent.....but let's use the Bolts as an example. Say the incumbent, Rivers, was to get injured and lost for the year in TC. Who do you see as the starting QB for the Bolts ? Does AL just hand it to Taylor, or does TT trade for ?? Or maybe AL had Taylor as the 3rd string QB at that point in TC, but clearly they couldn't go with a rookie..... Every year a team will deal with losing their preferred QB, and you think there isn't, or wasn't, any competition for that 2nd spot......or 3rd.....or...... If a player is no longer competing to start, or stay a starter, he needs to be released.

Should be fun to watch.

If a player is no longer competing to start, or stay a starter, he needs to be released. Or, draft a replacement with the 1st overall draft pick. Thus returning us to a confirmation of the original point you seemed to think disingenuous. There's not a competition, until there needs to be one.

I don't understand why I have to prove this point every year. I really don't. A 12-4 two games deep in the playoffs Team ?? I personally think we have the best roster in the NFL...........You had best better believe there is far far far less "competition" than fanboys want to fantasize about. You really think there is competition going on for Rivers, Gordon, Allen, Henry, Okung, Pouncey, Bosa, Ingram, Perryman, Derwin James, Hayward, King......forgive me for the ones I am forgetting. That is the weakest silliest fanboy fantasy I get to see every year. I laugh. Anthony Lynn laughs with me.

The entire 'competition at a position' point of view is completely disingenuous, as there is competition at every position, on every team, every year, all year. It clearly worked in Chargers favor when trading for Rivers resulted in a sharp drop in Ints thrown by Brees and a dramatic improvement in his QB rating. Bringing in a player who is, or who becomes an obvious threat to claim a starting job frequently improves the work ethic at that position among the "competition".

Uh Huh. Rivers just had a fantastic year with Geno Smith on the roster..................... Raise your hand if you believe Geno was a threat to replace a healthy PR.

It seems like every season, at some point, we hear the collective message board chanting for bringing in some reserve QB because of Rivers' play. No, I do not believe any QB currently on the roster will supplant Rivers as the starting QB. Does that mean there is no competition going on ?
