Interesting perspective. He would have been crucified on Twitter. It’s true tho, looking back, Marty (RIP) and his staff had no idea how to maximize DBs potential. It’s a testament to DBs sheer willpower and work ethic that he managed to breakout in year four but the damage was already done. Marty had fallen in love with PR when he coached him at the senior bowl and pushed for him to be drafted, following those events DB broke out and led the chargers to a 12-4 record, LOL I’ll be honest, we’d only seen flashes of greatness from brees in those first three years and I was one of those people that not only was happy PR got drafted but never saw DB having the turn around that he did in 2004, I was already off the DB bandwagon when he broke out. nowadays a lot of people will claim that they saw DB having the HOF career that he eventually had but I know most of them are full of horse pucky, only miami, san diego, and NO showed any real interest in him that offseason. Had he not gotten injured we would have either tagged and traded brees or traded phillip rivers that offseason. That whole thing was just crazy bad luck.

Like I said, he’s still royally pissed off at 31 teams, and to this day is still more pissed off at the Dolphins than the Chargers. He’s a Saint, and rightfully so. I THOUGHT Miami was the other team. How did Miami piss him off ? THEY should be pissed. Nothing after Dan Marino, at least we had Rivers. They chose Dante Culpepper over Brees. The gambled that a QB with a nuked knee was a better option than a QB with a nuked shoulder.

Watching the season finale from a bar at the Rio in Las Vegas, I can still vividly see the dirtier than dirt shoulder drop that Donko Gerard Warren aimed at Brees’ shoulder as Drew was reaching for the ball after being strip sacked from behind near the end zone. 😡 I had a sense that the play would alter the future, but I had no idea of the extent of what an earth-shaking event it would be be for two franchises. BTW If you rewatch the play, new starter Kris Dielman throws a great block to initially save Brees from being sacked, a harbinger of what was to come from him. Sadly, had he not made that block Brees wouldn’t have been injured on the play. Funny how things work out. 🤷♂️

Brees was PISSED!!!

They went after him again in 2006, but team doctors said he was a risk. They went for Culpepper who was coming of a knee surgery instead. lasted 4 games.

Interesting perspective. He would have been crucified on Twitter. So... basically 10 times the QB that Trent Dilfer ever was?

Just goes to show ... Point remains that Brees didn’t truly ascend until after that horrible injury that he suffered at the close of his fifth NFL season. 🤷♂️

Point remains that Brees didn’t truly ascend until after that horrible injury that he suffered at the close of his fifth NFL season. 🤷♂️ Schrottenheimer did everything he could to make Brees the starting qb even though Flutie for most of his time in San Diego was a better player. So you sink so low that you get the first overall choice in the draft and then you are clearly going to pick a quarterback. A question could be raised if you flip Eli Manning for something other than another qb... as in passing on Vick to get Tomlinson... but who in his right mind would have done that based on what Brees was producing? Praising Brees from my point of view as a Chargers fan would be rife with a great portion of revisionist history.

Funny how things work out. 🤷♂️ I try not to think or talk about those days too much, that event split the charger fan base in a terrible way, just in my family alone there were some heated arguments over those events. Some people defended coach for playing brees others were furious and wanted marty fired. A lot was written about how that caused a horrible rift between AJ and Marty, it sure didn’t help their relationship. AJ wanted to showcase PR in that final game (it was meaningless) to shop him around the league in trade. By this time Marty had flip flopped and now wanted to keep brees after he had fought so hard to get PR drafted. I guess going 12-4 might do that to a coach (RIP). It’s still the most horrific shoulder injury I’ve seen any player sustain in an NFL game let alone the throwing shoulder of a QB, drew probably learned later in his career not to dive into piles like that so he bares some responsibility too, the game was absof@#$inglutely meaningless, I’m still mad about that game. Never in a million years did I think drew would ever be able to throw a ball again, let alone throw for another 15 years in the NFL and rewrite all the record books. BTW, I used to love going to the Rio for their awesome buffet, LOL
