^^^As well they should be, the folks battling for a spot should be on the field. Football players in their majority do a tremendous job maintaining their conditioning and studying during the offseason. Long long gone are the days when football players needed training camp and preseason to get in shape and yet a lot of what the coaches and teams continue to do is based on the ways things used to be, but things are changing, I’m glad teams are protecting their starters now, it’s good for the fans, for the ratings, and for the rookies too.

Justin Herbert and Derwin James will not play at all in the preseason, per Brandon Staley. #Chargers #Chargers HC Brandon Staley says Austin Ekeler will NOT play in pre-season. #Chargers coach Brandon Staley says C Corey Linsley, RT Bryan Bulaga, DT Linval Joseph, and TE Jared Cook WILL NOT PLAY any preseason games either. They may take a few games to gel and shake off the cobwebs but this is probably for the best. If we’re going to lose key players I hope it’s at least game 2. |

From a marketing and sales POV it certainly makes sense to keep starters healthy going into the season. I wonder how much key injuries in preseason affect ticket sales?

Charger's new preseason uniforms.  And I’m all for it!! 😬 The best work that the Chargers will get are next week’s joint practices with the 49ers, and truth be told it’s been that way for several years as the best work they had gotten was the joint practices with the Saints. Preseason games are quickly transforming into exercises in giving rookies some needed game action and determining the final roster.But that is extremely important for us. Staley has his hands full this year. Picking the depth, picking the special teams guys, lots go into this. Hell we haven't even landed on a kicker yet. But University of Pitt is representing right now. Does he stay for kickoff duties ? I think so, just for as shaky as our kicker is we would have him on the sideline.
