Telesco and Staley both own the 2023 season. I - and more importantly the ownership - doesn't care about the difficulty of the schedule, injuries, bad breaks, etc. They produce with a playoff win (at a minimum) or they're out the door at season's end. I felt the same way about last year. Staley got an extra bite at the apple after management rejected his first two choices of offensive coordinators and forced Lombardi upon him in 2022 (I never knew about that until we’ll into this offseason). Needless to say, the forced marriage did not work out. I believe that the players’ vocal support of Staley along with the OC fiasco have Staley another season before they have to do a major cap revamp for the first time in many years. It’s do or die for both coach & GM this year. They are “all in” this season with a house cleaning to follow if they fall appreciably short of their 2023 goals.

My memory is in offseason training right now after taking last few months off. 😉 🤷♂️ I had blocked on my mind, but it wasn't the Chargers front office that blocked the offensive coordinator choice. This is from Popper's article right after Lombardi was fired and was mentioned again after Moore was hired: Lombardi was Staley's fourth choice after being prevented from hiring his first three choices. The Niners promoted McDaniel to offensive coordinator which stopped him from moving to the Chargers staff and the Chargers front office did not force Lombardi on Staley. It's too bad for us that he couldn't swing any of his first three choices because they were all significantly better than Lombardi, and Staley was certainly on the right track pursuing McDaniel before the Niners were forced to promote him or risk losing him. _____________ And in reality, the groundwork for this situation was laid before Lombardi was even hired by the Chargers. According to a league source, Lombardi was Staley’s fourth choice for offensive coordinator when he was building his staff in 2021. During that hiring cycle, the Chargers had contact with Mike McDaniel, then the 49ers run game coordinator, Kevin O’Connell, then the Rams offensive coordinator, and Nathaniel Hackett, then the Packers offensive coordinator, the source said.
All three have ties to the same coaching tree. McDaniel worked under Kyle Shanahan. O’Connell coached under Sean McVay, who coached with Shanahan in Washington in the early 2010s. Hackett had spent two seasons coaching under Matt LaFleur, who was also on that Washington staff and coached for McVay with the Rams.
None of those hires came to fruition. So Staley hired Lombardi, who he first met as a 22-year-old quarterback at Mercyhurt College in 2005. Lombardi was the offensive coordinator at Mercyhurst.
To Staley’s credit, he did not put his loyalty ahead of what was best for the organization. When Staley was an assistant at Division III St. Thomas in 2009, Lombardi invited him to sit in on Saints quarterbacks meetings with Drew Brees for a week. Lombardi was also a key factor in Staley getting his first NFL coaching job with the Bears in 2017.

That's some good info, I like Staley a little bit better now.

All I got out of that article is Staley owns the results from this defence..... Telesco and Staley both own the 2023 season. I - and more importantly the ownership - doesn't care about the difficulty of the schedule, injuries, bad breaks, etc. They produce with a playoff win (at a minimum) or they're out the door at season's end. Seems unlikely TT gets fired for results based reasoning, the club is well run currently....but....if J Spanos is ready to fly on his own. Staley needs to win.....but to be fair, when I look back I thought he did a pretty solid job considering the injury list....both the length and the names on it.

theathletic.com/4101751/2023/01/17/joe-lombardi-brandon-staley-offensive-coordinator/Staley was left with his 4th choice because he failed to retain Shane Steichen the obvious choice after what he did for Herbert in his rookie season. That was a mistake. Steichen of course went on to the Eagles OC and they reached the Super Bowl and now he’s a HC. No sympathy for Staley being stuck with Lombardi. The obvious and probably right choice was already in the building

It’s roster blowup time following the season if the results aren’t there largely due to the cap situation that will almost be as bad as the Rams faced last season. If it’s a roster rebuild surrounding key young talent, I don’t see Telesco being tasked with it after a dozen seasons at the helm & no results. I may end up being wrong regarding whether Telesco survives after another disappointing season, but let’s hope we don’t need to find out after the Chargers follow in the Rams’ 2021 footsteps. 🍺

TT & Staley will find success or both walk at the end of the season. I am expecting a more successful year.

The Chargers drafted WR and Edge.....with the hope that these players fill in after the departure of KA and Mack following this season. Signing Herbert will be the big chore ahead, but after that the issue is too much being spent on MW and Bosa. You say you "don’t see Telesco being tasked" with these decisions, as if the decisions are made in some vacuum. You are smarter than that Joe....clearly you recognize these decisions are a collaborative effort, with TT being the face of them. TT runs a good club, change for the sake of change happens, but it doesn't seem like the Spanos way. Every season that ends without a championship is a disappointing season? Or perhaps there are different versions of disappointment.....clearly last season's injuries were a big disappointment. The roster was looking very solid, then the injuries destroyed it, yet they made the PO's and should have won a PO game. Clearly TT should have been calling down to Staley and issuing orders that entire second half. lol

I find it frustrating how many of you all thought the preseason moves made by TT were just fantastic, then the season plays out in a way you do not like, and the blame TT chant starts. Fickle fans.....

Its a business, and results are all that matters. The business results are stunning. The value of NFL franchises keeps skyrocketing. The Spanos’ spend to the cap on players but go cheap on coaches and probably gm. Winning would be nice but not necessary for business success in the NFL. So rinse and repeat. Who’s the next rookie HC they can hire for cheap?
