I was just thinking about how hard it's been to predict the Chargers first round pick.
Think about the player chosen in each of the last several drafts- were any of them a consensus choice by pundits or fans? Maybe Justin Herbert, but plenty of us were calling for Isaiah Simmons that year.
And of course there's been great players drafted that were very unexpected, like Derwin's inexplicable fall to 17 that year. Even when we had the #3 pick in 2016 (which should be easy to predict), not many people had us taking Joey Bosa.
I think the most consensus we've ever had was when we drafted Melvin Gordon because our need for a RB was huge that year.
But most years, like last year and the year before, the team went in a direction most experts and fans were not expecting.
This is not a knock on the former GM or anything, just an observation that Charger drafts have been hard to predict.
Who was our most expected/predicted first rounder? Who was the least (worst)?

Very true. TT was unpredictable with the exception of Herbert, but then it was either Herbert or Tua. Least expected was probably Tillery, that one was a huge head scratcher for me.

We do ok. The Simmons year I laughed all the way. I KNEW we were going QB. So it was Tua or Herbert clearly for me. frozenfifthpick was screaming for Derwin James the year we drafted him.

The most predicted was Leaf, was it not?

The most predicted was Leaf, was it not? Leaf and Manning were rated the same. I think most of the fans were happy with either, some preferred Leaf because he could through a football over that mountain.

The most predicted was Leaf, was it not? I thought we were talking about TT's tenure? Leaf can probably be the most predicted of all time for what he was supposed to be and what we needed at the time.

Bosa was expected. We didn't need a QB, had the third pick, DE was a need and besides that he was viewed at the top. We knew we were goi g OT the Slater year. Whomever was best left when we picked. Herbert as well. Had to have a QB

The Fluker pick had me scratching my head… The failure of picking for need at the top rather than BPA. There was an early run on OL that year and TT wanted OL and Fluker was all that was left.
