It was a life threatening situation, but Okung says that it was caught and treated in time. No timetable for his return, but he is looking to play in 2019.
God bless you in your recovery, Russell. You are a good man.

They still have him in the active 90 roster, so that points to a decent possibility that the doctor gives him clearance in the not-too-distant future.

Chargers’ Russell Okung joins teammates on field after ‘near death’ experience
Starting left tackle says he's recovering from a pulmonary embolism caused by blood clotsBy GILBERT MANZANO | gmanzano@scng.com | PUBLISHED: July 25, 2019 at 5:57 pm | UPDATED: July 25, 2019 at 5:59 pm COSTA MESA — For veteran offensive linemen, the body aches never really go away. But what Chargers left tackle Russell Okung felt last month wasn’t the usual ankle or shoulder soreness. This was different. This type of pain was much more severe, but it didn’t affect his play on the field. Okung didn’t ignore the unfamiliar discomfort in his chest, and that precaution likely saved his life. After a month of mystery surrounding his undisclosed injury, Okung revealed Thursday morning in a statement that he suffered a pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots. Okung called it a “near death type of experience” and a “wake-up call.” Okung said he felt the unusual chest pain during a practice and sought medical treatment on June 1. “According to the doctors who treated me, the decision to do so likely saved my life,” Okung said in his statement. “When detected early, this condition is very treatable and I’m grateful to have access to the best available care as I continue on the path to full recovery. “I’m very grateful to my teammates, coaches and the entire Chargers organization for their care, support and understanding during this challenging situation. Thanks to an incredible medical team and a very supportive family. I hope to be back on the field as quickly as possible.” Okung was on the field for the first day of training camp, but was limited to stretching and rehab work on the side. But something as simple as warming up with teammates and getting to put on his No. 76 jersey probably seemed monumental for the 10-year veteran after the health scare. Okung said he’s OK now and quarterback Philip Rivers said, “He seems to be in great spirits.” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said Okung has attended meetings and helped the younger players. “Right now, he’s an assistant coach,” Lynn said. “We look forward to having him back one day. We have no idea when that’s going to be.” For now, the Chargers have Sam Tevi filling in for Okung at left tackle with Trent Scott taking over Tevi’s right tackle duties. With Okung having an unexpected medical issue, that likely led to Lynn thinking ahead in case his other Pro Bowl offensive lineman, Mike Pouncey, has a setback this season. Dan Feeney, who plays offensive guard, received snaps at center for the first day of practice at Jack Hammett Sports Complex. The Chargers will do lots of tinkering on the offensive line while Okung recovers. “We had the best people look at Russell, so it wasn’t that scary, but we wanted to take care of him right away,” Lynn said. www.ocregister.com/2019/07/25/chargers-russell-okung-joins-teammates-on-field-after-near-death-experience/?utm_source=listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_term=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ocregister.com%2f2019%2f07%2f25%2fchargers-russell-okung-joins-teammates-on-field-after-near-death-experience%2f&utm_campaign=scng-regional-prosports&utm_content=manual

TT really, really needs to find some vet OL help. Agreed. That’s what I got out of all of this. I mean, if Okung died we would have been screwed.

When we are more concerned about our chances of success over one of our players dying, it may be the ultimate Bolt Up. IDK
Freak Approved. I like the ones I struggle with.

Guess I should have prefaced with, “thoughts and prayers.” That would have changed everything.

Sioux Falls has good Ice Hockey program....... Going to be scary for Rivers, OT looks like an issue......maybe Pipkins shows to be the real steal of this last draft. I said TT made a very shrewd pick.

And every one of us knows it. We have all likely experienced it. But I’m not here to watch or debate NBC coverage of the Olympics, or human interest stories.

My dad is a pulmonologist. He started asking me about Okung. He said he doesn't know the specifics of this one, but he couldn't imagine letting someone who suffered a pulmonary embolism ever play football again. My uncle was there too and he's a cardiologist. They were discussing that maybe if there was a specific trauma that caused it then maybe he could play in the future. Or if steroids caused it then he could stop taking them and play (they were joking about this). But basically, unless they find a cause for the embolism then it's extremely dangerous to clear him. We all know there's a lot of pressure on everyone to get Okung to play, but it's really important he is healthy.
