Henri Richard passed away...... An incredible player, with 11 Stanley Cup championships, and such a dear friend. It has been an extremely long and tearful day here in Montreal. Que Dieu accueille votre âme au ciel mon ami ..... Sorry for the loss of your friend. Lost a close one of mine a few months back. God bless

This suave looking dude is the reason we have a trophy to give to the top goaltender in the NHL. Meet George Vezina, From 1910-1925 he was the ONLY goalie for the Montreal Canadiens. Nicknamed the Chicoutimi Cucumber for the small town he was from and his calm demeanor in net, He allowed the fewest goals in his league seven times in his long career. His story is so fascinating to a guy like me, playing for a remote Quebec town at the turn of the century, The "team" he played for was barely organized. They called themselves the people of Chicoutimi and in 1909 he was in net, when this Podunk group of beer leaguers shut out the Montreal canadiens. Keep in mind, this kid didn't even learn to skate until he was 16, He literally played in boots (He couldn't afford skates) before then. So obviously the Canadians were very interested in Vezina, But he had to be coaxed by his brother to even go and try out for the team. The brother didn't make it, But the Canadians were blown away. So he signed his first professional contract, for $800 Canadian a season....(adjusted for inflation that's about a minimum wage job), and the rest is history. I really can't overstate, how incredible his longevity was for this time period. Goalies especially, dropped in and out of the professional leagues season to season and no one was at the top of their game for a decade that long ago. Tragically, Vezina left it all on the ice. Like a lot of the very early players of the game, he died for the sport. Playing one night, Vezina left the game early complaining of an illness. In reality he had tuberculosis and died shortly thereafter. He was 39, again no one played that long the pioneer days. The next season the Canadiens donated to the NHL The George Vezina trophy. A much younger me studying this, amused that this was the reason so many incredible goalies came from the Canadiens.

thanks for sharing that. I always enjoy the stories of people with humble beginnings and virtually no "ME" in thier life, yet they leave the most lasting and influential legacies.

Yes, it is good to know this history, and it is quite surprising how many of these current players are aware of this information. The really good players, superstars, are very connected to the past in a way most fans never know. They truly are students of the history of the game, and that knowledge brings them a sense of humbleness that is difficult to understand, yet appreciated by us older players. I was in the room one time when Gally was explaining the Vezina history to Price.....they were actually arguing over a point, and Gally asked me if I knew Vezina......A snide chirp from Gally, to which I responded that Detroit was a wonderful place to play, in spite of all the losing. Stories......so many, I am truly blessed.

Penguins are the 5th Seed. Montreal--last place 12th seed with the worst record in the playoff format. They don't even belong.
React to the stats !!!!

Without going into too much detail, I will say there are those that preferred a 10 club format, which would have seen us not included in this PO/Tournament effort. This 10 club format also would have not seen a 'play in' aspect. A club would either be 'in' the PO's, or would be 'out' and into the draft lottery.

If this actually happens, then that would be the match up. Best of five series.....

Poor goalie, Gordie must have tripped him. That groovy looking girl just doesn't seem to be in the correct section, eh?
