I am curious to see what the new staff does with MW. I thought he looked good coming out of college, though he’s been pretty disappointing as a pro so far. Maybe Staley and crew can get more out of him. MW is about the same player he was in college. Now he's on a team where he is not the best or biggest and has to share targets with a legit #1 NFL WR, a top receiving RB and a quality TE receiver. College weak points: played in a simple spread offense with a limited route tree. Had some concentration drops. Not a burner. Not much has changed aside from playing in the NFL where he is not a #1. He's a good WR with some physical gifts. Maybe Staley - Lombardi - Beatty can get more from him. My guess: he remains a good, not great #2 - 3 WR high point specialist.

There's nothing wrong with MW. I happen to think he is a WR3, that they make play WR2. There is nothing wrong with that kind of player. There is everything wrong with 15 million. Keenan Allen is going to make 15.7 million this year. Let that sink in for a minute. What exactly determines WR1 versus WR2 or 3 ? Production. Is his QB's most trusted target.

Well that’s really the problem, he hasn’t gotten better. I won’t pretend to know why, but I will say it’s unacceptable that he’s basically the same player he was as a rookie. Everyone can improve.

Mike Williams sure has been a hot topic this offseason, or more specifically his salary for the 5th year option has been the topic. I've been in the camp of that's WAAAAY too much money! But nothing against MW, I think that's too much money for almost any receiver ( and yes that includes Julio Jones at this point in time!) Mike Williams' stats the past four years have been: - 11 catches/95 yards/0 touchdowns as a rookie in 2017 where he was paid $3.6 million
- 2018 43/664/10 for a salary cap amount of $4.5 million
- 2019 19/1,001/2 for a salary cap amount of $5.4 million
- 2020 (last year) 48/756/5 for a salary cap amount of $6.4 million
His rookie year was clearly a waste (due to injuries) but his production the other three years doesn't seem out of whack for his price. 10 touchdowns is excellent! A 1,000 yard season is amazing! Too bad there are glaring inconsistencies in the other stats for those two years, though. And then last year is what I'd consider the new floor for a Mike Williams season. He was above average in each of the three key stats (receptions/yards/touchdowns) but not exceptional in any. And his salary fit that above average category.
Which leads me to my main point- Mike Williams has yet to be paid that $15 million, and at the end of the season if his stats are still just slightly above average then his $15m salary will be WAAAAY out of whack!
But if he puts up a Julio Jones like season of 100+ catches, 1,400 yards, 8 touchdowns then none of us will care how much he got paid because he played up to that salary!
So it's clear we collectively don't think Mike Williams will perform up to his salary, but how cool would it be if he actually did? ? ? ?
Let's hope! Bolt up!

Lombardi's offense will emphasize distribution to a variety of targets.
Create conflict ie mismatches. Confuse defenders. Trips over here. motion over there. unusual packages.
There will be blurring of roles at RB, TE & WR.
Generally, throw away depth charts. Include DL/DB with that notion. Obviously don't include QB, OL, and I would add Off LOS LB. Depth charts strictly apply there. It's a ball o' confusion everywhere else, by design.
Welcome to Staley's World.

Welcome to Staley's World.Hopefully its not ball O' confusion for Herbert... He flourished under Seinfeld or whatever his name was, he kept it simple and even though I thought he was a trash OC it seemed to have worked. For the record, I think Herbert will be fine.

He should have an advantage over pretty much everyone with his size and strength, but for all that he hasn’t been particularly effective. Julio on the other hand is a walking mismatch....

OK. I just happen to disagree with most about @darealmike_dub's impact.
See yards per reception average.
A serious bargain must be struck after 2021 or go in a different direction.
So we kind of agree.

I believe a healthy MW will have some elite catches and make a difference in some W's. Season wide elite stats in '21? Probably not. He's one piece in a cast of targets. I'd like to keep him. Price is the question.

Price is the question. MW should have a solid year, and it will be interesting to see how the staff utilizes the players. What I mean by that is I see MW's targets going up, and someone else's goes down. I am in agreement with Joe, I believe TT gets an extension signed that keeps MW around while also lowering the annual cost.
