So? With the chargers’ history of success finding players in UDRFA you still think a guy like merrill can’t become a cog in the machine? Do I really need to rattle off some long ass list of undrafted rookie free agents that’ve become studs for this team? I’ve done those lists several times before and I think you know full well who all those fuggers are so I’m not doing it again. Merrill came in and looked better than fehoko in preseason with fehoko having had a full year of experience plus having linval joseph’s tutelage in said year, now that’s saying something right there! That tells me merrill got overooled in the draft because of his stature and that his upside is higher than fehoko’s. If forrest merrill was 6’5” 330 instead of 5’11 7/8” 330 were would he have gone in the draft, hmm? Have you seen any of his college tape? He dominated against SEC offensive linemen that got drafted in rounds 1-4, the kid is legit, drafted or otherwise! merrill not only made the initial 53 man roster but he is also one of the 4 “protected” members of the practice squad. A player goes undrafted for a reason, and that reason rarely is the 32 clubs all missed.

Just because we have "had" some luck or success with UDFA in the past does not mean a whole lot. Maybe Merrill is better than our scrubs, bring him in... Whats it going to hurt? They're cheap anyways. But I wouldn't assume they'll be pro bowlers just because we grab them.

Our roster has gotten a LOT better, so those UDFA's odds go down. Merrill has to be of some value to stick on the practice squad. We hung onto him for a reason. If we are hurt or not performing by all means bring him up.

Look, if he’s all that we’d love to see him but a history of success with UDFA’s doesn’t mean Merrill is going to be that guy and playing better than another practice squad player just gets you protected on the practice squad. Maybe his toe injury has slowed him or maybe he’s not one of the best DL activated on game day. At this point, I’m on board with Staley. It’s a long season. We may see him yet

Ekeler is a little more down to earth quality UDFA. Starting CB Mike Davis, starting LG Matt Feiler are pretty good UDFAs also.

I want to see Merrill get some action. He may not be an all around DT but he's tough to push around. What do you see that the coaches don’t? This staff signed him in free agency, then this staff had him on the initial roster, and since then this same staff has had him designated as one of the 4 protected players on the practice squad. The kid is around not because of anything I think, he’s around because the chargers DO SEE something in him. Look, all I care about are results, if merrill can help get this team out of the run defense cellar, then his draft status means squat to me. Wasn’t john randle an undrafted rookie free agent? I’m not saying merrill will become that but he could become a solid player, you never know. How many of us thought kris dielman would make the roster as an offensive lineman and then later become an all pro guard? I know I didn’t.

PAISAN!!! He tore it up in preseason and forced a mahomes fumble in KC, the one we didn’t recover, I think it rolled out of bounds, but here was gaizano making a play 20 yards down the field from his DT position!!!

Another UDFA. That I like. Joe plays on the other side of the line more than Merrill and is an all-around interior DT. He gets QB pressure and can play the run on his way in. Merrill is more of a border wall that can get penetration.

Regards Merrill, he's a plugger at the LOS. Joseph is the only guy that holds up as well. Apparently rushing yards aren't Staley's greatest concern. Gaziano doesn't plug the LOS as well, does get QB pressure and plays a larger field in pursuit of a ball carrier.
It's about how Staley wants to defend vs Turds. Priority no. 1, QB pressure.
