Could this be the year the chargers make a trade? Not to get rid of someone (king) but to ADD someone. I’m trying to think from the perspective of the GM, the team has exceeded expectations and is still improving.
From ownership and GM point of view are they having discussions right now on how to further improve before the deadline? OR is the thinking we’ll stick with what we have and we’re still building and a year away etc.
There is always room for improvement, but I’m wondering if the hot start creates more incentive to upgrade? Perhaps an interior defensive lineman to help against the run, maybe another pass rusher? IDK, just spitballing here but I’m thinking this team is a slightly improved/upgraded defense away from going deep into the playoffs, thoughts?
staley has already shown he can get a lot out of average to good players (at the rams) so it wouldn’t have to be a blockbuster trade but maybe one or two guys here and there that would help to shore up this defense even more?
sometimes teams that aren’t doing well look to build draft capital this time of year so there could be some bargains out there. And just because the chargers don’t normally do that doesn’t mean they won’t. They do have around 12mil in cap space to play with.

The last time I remember the Chargers making a significant trade deadline deal was in 2007 when they dealt for Chris Chambers - a season the gravely injured Chargers squad won 8 straight & made the AFC Championship game before wearing out in the 4th quarter. Perhaps it’s time to do it again provided the right opportunity presents itself.

Similarly, there are many defensive players out there that have a connection to Staley and would have a general idea of how his defense works. I don’t actually have anyone in mind but it wouldn’t surprise me if ownership and telesco decide to give staley additional help before the deadline.

I like nwosu and frackwell but neither guy gets as much pressure on the QB as I’d like
after seeing what ngakoue has done for crosby in las vegas, I’m thinking joey could really blow up if the chargers manage to find another guy that can consistently get pressure.

If they make a big trade it’s almost certainly because their data and analysis suggests that they can “make a run” this season (rather than after next draft/FA). The only positions I could see them doing that for are OL, DL, S (if Derwin gets hurt), or RB (if Ek gets hurt). Otherwise I think they ride it out.

Maybe I’m just old and out of touch but, I can’t remember the last time the AFC looked this wide open, NE is down, Pittsburgh is down, Indy is struggling, Tennessee is struggling, Baltimore is beat up, Kansas city is beatable, Las Vegas is beatable, Cincinnati and Denver are flawed, so Cleveland and Buffalo are probably the biggest hurdles this year. Sometimes you just have to realize it’s a down year and you have to capitalize while the opportunity presents itself and like freak likes to say, why not us?

It’s just an expression, it just means we’re not necessarily looking up at anyone in our own conference. I understand the expression. But there are many good teams every year. It’s never “wide open.” If the Chargers think that a trade will improve the team’s ability to win a championship it will. If they think it the cost exceeds the benefits in light of the multi-year talent and cap strategy, they won’t.

I believe it is far too early for that type of thinking....they will see how the product develops as well as possible injury needs.....now if approached by another GM, then you always listen.
The trade game is difficult, doesn't matter if NFL or NHL.

I hope we don't bring in a big name. We have some important players that need to be re-signed next year. I'm hoping that most of that $12 million rolls over and is used wisely.
Barring injuries, I think the defense will be fine. Run the Staley System... the defense will continue to get better.
On offense, the RT position is what it is. Very few teams are giving up their OT's. If anything, maybe a replacement for fragile Justin Jackson. Alex Collins has looked good in Seattle. With Russell Wilson's injury, the Seahawks may quickly find themselves at the bottom of a tough division and looking toward next year. Collins is a FA at the end of the year. He was a 5th round pick... sounds about right.

The trade game is difficult, doesn't matter if NFL or NHL. The trade deadline is around the corner in like what, 3-4 weeks? Read the OP, I wasn’t talking about trading away high draft picks. The chargers have almost 12 million in cap space and they’ll have two picks in round 6 and four in round 7 bringing their tally to eleven total picks for the 2022 draft. This time of year struggling teams sometimes dump veteran contracts for low round picks when they realize that the year isn’t going as planned. Like I said, just speculating, it seems like the situation is right to try to do something to give the run defense and pass rush a nice little boost if possible.

I’m not talking about picking up a long contract that affects extensions, your collins example is a really good one, just apply that type of situation to a pass rusher and a DT, veteran guys with expiring deals that can help now. Guys that’ll be off the books by march and may even net us compensatory picks for 2023. I’ve seen the ravens do this many times and I’m thinking shoring up the defense is the big key to getting further in the playoffs. On offense Bulaga might come back in time for a playoff run and we already have good depth at RB. Why is everyone so down on our backs? I hate that JJ can’t stay healthy but we still have roundtree, kelly and my personal favorite, bradwell.

We need a run stuffer badly... If this team hopes to get anywhere in the post season we need to give up a pick for someone now.
