Carroll not only had NFL assistant coach experience, he had two prior NFL head coaching gigs before USC & Seattle. His younger versions that failed would likely have had a different result in today’s NFL. As for Harbaugh, he played and mostly started as an NFL QB for at least a dozen years. And that’s after growing up from a toddler as the son of an NFL assistant coach. Harbaugh isn’t even an outlier in my book: he spent 35 years in an NFL environment when he made the sojourn into collegiate coaching prior to his 49er head coaching job. Has there been a better player than Harbaugh who became a successful HC? He may have had the best playing career of any NFL HC. Both Harbaugh kids have had great coaching careers I would say Mike Ditka. What gets lost with his demeanor and winning a Super Bowl as a HC is he was a HELL of a Tight End in the NFL.

I was to understand that was the plan before they even drafted him. The plan was for him to be the starter in the future (hopefully at some point this year). Gardner Minshew was signed in anticipation that he'd begin the season as the starter until Richardson was ready as he had only 13 collegiate starts under his belt. Richardson said that he was shocked to be named the starter at the media session today. The spotlight increases for Richardson, who has an extremely high ceiling because of his physical gifts but is very inexperienced with a 6-7 record in just 13 starts at Florida. Richardson’s 53.8 completion percentage last year ranked 13 out of 14 starting SEC quarterbacks.theathletic.com/4777819/2023/08/15/anthony-richardson-colts-starting-quarterback/

He saw Herbert do it as a rookie. I have a feeling he’s in for a rude awakening

The worry with starting a an inexperienced QB like Richardson right off the bat is that a bad / slow start could affect the young QB’s confidence and end up stunting his development. It’s definitely a roll of the dice, but Minshew is there in the event that Richardson struggles and needs to take a seat for a while. I’m wishing the young man good luck until/unless they face the Chargers.

You think Minshew is a 17 game starter. Uh, no. Drafted in the first to be a franchise QB. Now suit up and get out there.

Of course Minshew isn't a 17-game starter, but he is a guy who can win games with a decent roster for a stretch of games. Please let Moe and I knew who you heard from otherwise. Everything that I have read stated / assumed that Richardson was on the same plan as most highly drafted rookie QB's are (e.g., Ryan Fitzpatrick & Tua) and the plan Herbert was on until the evil doctor punctured Taylor's lung with a pain injection shot: playing backup for the first 6-8 games and then take over the reins after the rookie has gotten accustomed to the NFL weekly process and reading the speed of regular season action. One thing for sure is that Richardson is greener than green and was hugely inconsistent in his one collegiate season of play.

However, you have earned the rack, and implicated your accomplice for rack #2. Congrats.

OJ Howard cut by the Raiders..... If we're happy with Stick as our QB insurance then we should try and get OJ Howard on the cheap... 2 reasons: We need Parham insurance, the other reason being former division rival. Raiders do it to us all the time...
