The problem with injuries and unavailability of our front line cornerstone type players isn’t that we don’t have adequate depth right behind them. We may, we’ll just have to see. It’s when the depth guys get banged up and have to miss a game or two (that’s me being optimistic). Then we’re talking 3rd stringers and we’re likely out of our depth. This is true for almost every team. having 3rd string players that are as good a level 2 is a luxury. The problem and I think your point, is the bolts have ended up in level 3 far too often in recent years. last year was better. Prior to that was the 2nd string depth was actually more like 3. So far we are hit at the top in a couple places too too early. Not a good sign. Hopefully it doesn't get worse.

I have to disagree- James is much harder to replace than Gordon. I'm a Gordon fan, but I can see his absence adequately ( that doesn't mean equally!) filled in by Ekeler and Jackson. Heck, every football analyst or writer uses the word fungible to describe the entire RB market! Gordon is a good- but not great!- RB and there is ample proof that good RBs have been adequately replaced when they miss games. James however is more than just a good player. He is an elite chess piece on the defense. He can play deep, cover man to man, rush from the line, play LB, CB, SS, FS, blitz, tackle, stop the run and defend the passing game. Despite being a rookie last year he is already viewed as a generational talent, and is only getting better! He would be replaced by AP, Jenkins and other more unproven safeties. None of them- individually or collectively- can do what James does. And while I am very proud of AP's All Pro status, let's remember he earned that for his Special Teams play. Oh, hi oh, Ohio ! The entire market ? Elliot is fungible ? Yeah, I don't think so. How are AP and Jenkins unproven safeties ? They played terrific for us last year. Did you miss last year ? To be clear, I said AP and Jenkins and then "other unproven players", separating those two from the other unproven ones. I'm not arguing that there aren't great RBs around the league, the context of my post is the premise is that for the Chargers James is harder to replace than Gordon. I used the fungible term as evidence that league-wide RBs are considered more replaceable than most other positions.

Watkins has a Superbowl ring.
I can't get better than a 7th rounder replacing Gordon, and an All -Pro replacing James. If you can't discern that difference, then I respectfully agree to disagree with you, in order to maintain a civil discourse on our forum.
(The Emperor's scorched earth invasion of Ohio will be glorious to be witnessed by all.)

I wonder if the fracture is at the screw location. Which would indicate it could have been a sub standard operation. Which would make it even more frustrating.

No surprise here (unfortunately): Chargers to place safety Derwin James on IR Jeremy Bergman Around The NFL Writer Derwin James is heading to injured reserve. The Los Angeles Chargers safety will be placed on IR ahead of Week 1, the team said in a press release Thursday. James underwent successful surgery Thursday to address a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his foot, the Chargers added. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay, Wis. It was reported Saturday that James would undergo surgery on his injured foot and was likely to miss three months. That would peg his return as sometime in November. A player placed on injured reserve to start the season cannot be activated until after Week 8, when the team can designate up to two players to return to the active roster. If and when James is designated to return, his first potential appearance could come in L.A.'s Week 9 matchup with the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 3. The Chargers claimed James with the No. 17 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and he immediately became a defensive anchor. James recorded 105 tackles, three interceptions, 13 passes defended and 3.5 sacks to earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. The latter made him one of eight rookie defenders to make first-team All-Pro since the 1970 merger, per NFL Research. Los Angeles is expected to lean on defensive back Adrian Phillips to fulfill some of James' duties, though the safety insists he won't be "stepping into this position to be anything that Derwin was." "When you start thinking you're replacing somebody or you have to live up to what somebody else has done," Phillips said this week, "that's when all the bad stuff starts to happen." Other potential fill-ins in the defensive backfield are Rayshawn Jenkins, Desmond King, Jaylen Watkins and rookie Nasir Adderley, who has been held out with a hamstring injury but returned to practice on Thursday. amp.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001043341/article/chargers-to-place-derwin-james-on-injured-reserve?

I was going to remind that King can play safety, but the article caught it. I prefer him in the slot. We need Watkins to continue his good summer work. That would help greatly. Adderley needs to get over that hamstring and contribute. Jenkins got lean in order to compete for free safety this year, and has already been told we need him to help at SS. Do you think we get Phillips full on, or will Bradley do more rotation than average ?
