1) I’d like to see the Chargers use some of their available cap space to re-sign the following two Chargers. Michael Davis, with the secondary getting old and his accumulated experience he’s become a huge offseason priority. Rayshawn Jenkins, with Derwin’s injury concerns and Adderly’s slow development he’s up there with Michael Davis in terms of importance. Both are young and experienced plus they will get better under Staley and both should come at an affordable price.
2) Create cap room to franchise tag Hunter Henry once again and then deal with his long term contract after free agency and the draft. Cutting Trai Turner (no second guessing here) allows the Chargers to re-tag Henry and focus on other free agent pursuits. I think allowing Hunter Henry to walk would be a huge mistake.
3) create additional cap room to pursue free agents Darius Williams and Leonard Floyd. This will unfortunately involve cutting Casey Hayward. Hayward like Turner is kind of a no brainer cut IMHO. Williams and Floyd are already familiar with Staley’s system and their impact would be immediate and would help to lessen the learning curve of current charger defenders.
4) create additional cap room to sign entire draft class plus low cost roster depth free agents and UDRFAs by trading or cutting (preferably trading) Mike Williams. I’ve thought about this one a lot because I genuinely love Mike Williams but I don’t feel he’s worth 15million for the year. Someone that knows football more than me will probably disagree. Barring a trade I believe he could wind up being a surprise cut this offseason.
5) invest heavily on offensive line early in the draft, I’d like to see the first 4 picks include a OT, TE, C/G, and a CB. Edge depth in this draft is great so a really good one can be found in round 4. Round 5 we should consider drafting a new kicker. Then 6-7 add depth at ILB, S, and O-line again. Keep in mind we’ll already be shedding D-line to switch defensive scheme so I don’t think they’ll draft one in a year that’s thin at interior D-line where teams will be reaching and drafting them higher than they should. If we land the right TE in rounds 1 or 2 then trading or keeping Hunter just one more year becomes plausible.

cut bait with HH. I wouldn't try hard to keep him, nor would I be looking to draft a TE when he left. We have worse needs to fill

We have worse needs to fill Hunter has value, I’d like to see the team control that value, you can make the argument he’s not the longterm answer at TE for the team but he can be traded to accumulated draft capital or he can buy the team another year to find his replacement. I like Green, Parham, and Anderson but I don’t think any one of them can fill Hunters shoes full time, the Chargers might think otherwise we’ll see.

Of all of the players to resign, HH is the first one for me as long as his camp is realistic. He’s a solid player and has a relationship with JH. If he wants more than fair and can get it somewhere else, the analysis gets tougher.

Strong take with Hayward and HH... Do you draft Surtain or Pitts? I would take either one of those guys at 13, almost every mock I’ve seen has both gone in the top ten so at 13 that would be best available even tho the need is stronger at OT, those guys would be too hard to pass up. It’s too early in the process and things will change after free agency and pro days leading up to the draft.

But at that cost he’d have to be one of the elite receiving TEs to make up for the lack of blocking. He’ll get more than the Chargers should pay. He looks big enough and strong enough but maybe the desire is not there? Tag and trade would be my first choice. The kind of offense Staley wants to install (balanced) will require better blocking from the TE position. That kid from Norte Dame (tremble?) might be around when the chargers pick in the 3rd?

No chance TT drops HH for a 3rd rounder. I think HH is viewed by most (including me) to be a better-than-average blocking TE in addition to having good pass catching performance. He’s not top 3 but paying him as a top 10 seems right to me.

I'm honestly curious if HH is better under Staley... HH had a great rookie season under McCoy and then fell apart under Lynn, both physically and statistically. Was it Lynn's fault? Gotta wonder...

Listen to the Chargers podcast where they talk about Lombardi and the Saints offense. The gist of it is that the Saints continually redesigned what they did to take advantage of their skill guys. Apropos of HH, they said when Jimmy Graham was a Saint he had career years. Not duplicated in Seattle or Chicago. They thought HH could do the same

If rounds 1-4 are used as stated above, OT, TE, C/G, and a CB, then you are not getting a "Edge depth in this draft is great so a really good one can be found in round 4"......
You don't want to pay MW 15 million, but would tag HH again. You know what that would cost? I agree with TB, just make a decision, sign him or move on.

According to the FT formula it would cost about 12m to tag Henry for 2021. I don’t believe the Chargers will necessarily have to make that choice but if I had to choose between carrying HH for 12m or paying MW 15.68m for one season, I go with Henry and I don’t even look back. It’s much more difficult to replace Henry’s production at TE than Mike William’s production at receiver. Even if they extend Henry I still think they need to draft another TE with one of the first 4 picks. Green might not be back as well. MW I love, it’s hard not to, but he has not grown his game 4 years in the league and still plays like he did in year 1. This year because of the lack of growth of the cap there will be much less expensive veteran options on the street that already have polished their skills beyond what Mike has. This will be a great year to get one of those guys on a 1-2 year for maybe 50% less than Mike’s 5th year option. Herbert deserves a more reliable 3rd option than Williams.
