I thought it might be fun to speculate on potential surprise Chargers in the 2021 season. I’m not talking about bad outcomes, I’m referring to those players that could potentially break out and establish themselves this coming season. Who has stood out to you guys as a player that could become a bigger role player for the Chargers? I was watching 2020 highlights and something jumped out at me, Donald Parham might be WAY better than I first gave him credit. I’ve formerly looked at him as kind of a niche one dimensional redzone TD threat because of his high TD to catch ratio. A gimmick player. But now I’m beginning to think he is much more than that. First thing that stood out was his blocking, he blocks a lot better than I rembered and he seemed to improve as the year progressed. He is willing and alert blocker, turning to pickup DBs when our backs catch out of the backfield. He also pass blocks better than I recall. On his run blocking I still need to do more research as most highlights feature Justin Herbert pass plays. His blocking tells me he is stronger than I previously thought. Also I noticed his route running is much more developed than I previously gave him credit. Mind you, I’m not saying he’s Travis Kelcy but the kid has some moves, he cuts suprisingly well for a man that’s 6’8” tall! He uses WR style head movements to fool people covering him. He has a knack for getting open. The catching radius is massive and he is much more agile and athletic than I previously thought. He can catch low throws and can also make people miss in open space with a side step that leaves DBs far away from his weight bearing leg causing them to miss tackles. the kid attacks the ball in the air too and can catch in a wide variety of angles over each shoulder, he adjust very well to the ball with his hands, body, and feet which enables him to extend plays after the catch. I realize a lot of people are really hyped up about him already but I must admit I haven’t been one of those people but that might be changing. I think his role is going to expand in 2021 and I think he’ll make the most of it EDIT: I was trying to figure out why Parham can move like he does at his height. Unlike a lot of tall guys he’s not top heavy, he has a large behind and thighs. So his weight is evenly distributed despite his height. He’s also much faster than he seems because he covers a ton of ground with his long strides. On top of that he has a quick twitch burst that permits him to reach top speed quickly like a receiver. He’s not going to mark bavaro people down the field but he will surprise linebackers with his burst and speed. an area that he needs to improve is catching contested balls but I believe that’s an area that he can definitely grow in his game with more experience, better technique (shielding away defenders better), and getting stronger in his hands. BTW, parham was originally signed by the detroit lions in 2019 and cut two days after signing a UDRFA deal, like what the #$&@ is that? They never even gave the kid a chance to come in and compete. Then dallas breifly picked him up and cut him then resigned him at the beginning of 2019 season to their practice squad and then cut him after 5 days on the practice squad. Once the chargers got their mitts on him in 2020 he’s been with the team since. here is a great parham trivia question going forward, he was a 9th round draft choice of the 2020 XFL draft!!! So it’s not like even the XFL knew what they had on their hands. I believe Storm Norton was the first overall pick of that same draft, OMG, LOL!!! Parham played a grand total of one game in the XFL he caught 5 passes for 76 yards in that game before the season was covid cancelled. Here is a bold prediction, I think Parham will develop into a top 10 TE in the NFL! His story will rival gates in regards to how unlikely and crazy his road to the Chargers has been and even if his production never comes near gates levels (hard to top that) he has a solid opportunity to surpass HH career numbers with the Chargers and that is enough to make bolt fans everywhere very happy

I figured he would have latched on to a few words and missed the rest. It was probably a good thing.

I'm going to go bold and say Tyron Johnson... I hope he can become a legit #2 WR and continue to improve his route running.

Perhaps, but I’m not sure he needs a tutor. he just needs more time to develop. you just can’t tutor a lot of what Parham already has. I will not be surprised if Parham gets 2-3 times more targets in 2021 than he did in 2020. Cook is 34 so hopefully he can stay on the field most of the season, but It’s possible Parham ends the season with around 40 catches, 450 yards, and 6-8 TDs anyway. I think his role is going to be increased barring some kind of set back.

Johnson is a prime candidate for this list and he improved a lot as the year progressed. I think both guyton and johnson were given an extended tryout last season and while it appeared guyton’s touches stayed the same or decreased, it seemed like johnson’s role increased steadily as the year progressed, especially after KA got hurt.

PS EVERY young player needs some vet guidance. Cook has seen it all.

Both deep threats. I thought Ty came on as the year progressed and seems to have better hands than Guyton.

I think he just kind of fell in their laps and we have to thank pep hamilton for him and storm norton whom I also believe will improve in 2021 and become the teams swing tackle. I believe both of those men played for pep in the XFL but I could be mistaken, maybe the credit goes to TT all the way, more research is needed at this time. He has done nothing but improve from day one. I saw guyton and johnson come in on equal footing but johnson quickly established himself as a more reliable catcher of the football, a much more polished and still improving route runner, and the speed is comparable although guyton might be faster. Guyton will have his work cut out this offseason to catch up to what johnson is already showing and johnson is still improving. I certainly hope guyton catches up to johnson as that would be great for the chargers moving forward who are the great UDRFA WR signings in charger history, welker, floyd, osgood, and williams? I think when it’s all said and done johnson could fall somewhere between williams and floyd or maybe even surpass both. Either way it’s great news for Charger fans that they found tyron johnson:)

Speed is fine, hands not there yet. Either way, if Johnson, and or Guyton improve enough ot be solid contributors its a win for the bolts.
