Herbert was very productive as a rookie when Anthony Lynn was the HC. True. Herbert will never be a rookie again, also true. Odds are excellent that the O will be different this year under OC Lombardi with a new & superior OL. For starts, I expect that we'll have an improved running game. I believe Herbert will play on a team that has a better W-L result. I do not believe that he regress as a QB.
I believe that you are a smart cookie and so I believe that I believe this. i'll be negative nancy. I do not disagree our O will be better, esp with what appears to be a huge OL improvement. Throw in herbert's yr 2 growth.. all great. The caveat is the D. I do not see a big improvement there from a D, that simply did not hold up in many games allowing too many game winning drives. I am as hopeful for the bolts to not only have a lombardi on the team but for lombardi trophy for the team as the rest of us. But I'll withhold my enthusiasm until I see something to change my mind.

Caveat emptor applies as always. No guarantees.
BUT!!
My opinion is Hammer (Staley) meet nail (weak D, STs).
(I won't be betting the farm either.)

I see we’re operating under the assumption that Staley is an upgrade.

I think the bar was pretty low. Uhuh. Remember when MM replaced Norv? Or when Marty replaced Riley? Ross replaced Henning? Coryell replaced Prothro? Sometimes you get better. I was hopeful for former Den OC McCoy but at no time did I believe that he was a contender for best offensive mind in the NFL.
Brandon Staley is in the running for best defensive mind in the NFL. Which, on the surface, appears to be exactly what we need. Wade Phillips was one of our best DCs ever. Staley did a great job of replacing him on LAR. Staley may or may not be the answer as HC, we'll just have to see. Being an upgrade for D ( which he says he will run) & STs is a very strong probability.

I feel the D will improve just due to Derwin James being back. Also I believe Staley will create a gameplan that will bring out the best in him and Bosa like he did with the Rams with Ramsey and Donald.

Yeah you’re 100% right. I’m excited and I think we’ll do well. My only point was, don’t expect everything we did last year to carry over plus improvement.

Pretty happy with this draft... So glad TT has learned from his prior mistakes. Slater is a great technician and the most Day 1 ready OT of the draft. Do I worry about his arm length...? Yes. But his footwork is wonderful and he uses his hands to defeat pass rushers like a ready-made pro. Lombardi may have led us to a Lombardi. (Disclaimer: no crack was used in the writing of this post.) Just as I suggested (no research needed for those of you that are too lazy) Asante Samuels Jr. would be the pick if he was still available. Good cover skills, instincts, and smarts. PON meet BPA. I could write more... but then I'd be ranting. Same, I thought they did a nice job of plugging holes with really talented guys that will start day one in slater and ASJ and in the 3rd round they brought in two starters for 2022, one to replace cook and one to replace MW. the rest of the draft was one O-line and DB depth and then pure STs. Also for STs it sounds like the chargers grabbed a really good kicker in UDFA, an interesting safety and an interesting RT, I can’t wait to see these guys in the preseason. they still have around 8-9mil in cap room to sign a few more vets perhaps in the secondary. This draft really really helped the team, no question about it.

I think the bar was pretty low. Uhuh. Remember when MM replaced Norv? Yeah. Let’s hope that’s not what this is. I suspect it won’t be as Staley seems intelligent (MM never did). (Good to see you here. Was an irregular poster and regular reader at CMB from about the mid-2000s. Your comments were always appreciated.)

2021 Senior Bowl proved to be important to Chargers' draft By Gavino Borquez | 5:16 pm The draft starts in Mobile. For the 32 NFL teams in attendance, the Senior Bowl is a chance to see some of college football’s top players square off in a week of practices and a full game to wrap things up in order to prove to them that they can prepare, practice and compete like pros. Within all of the action on the football field, this is team’s first opportunity to sit down and get to know the prospects after watching them for years at their perspective school and talking to their coaches to gain more information on them. However, this year’s Senior Bowl was even more vital to team’s evaluation process than previous ones because of the limited exposure to players during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a handful of cancelled games and opt outs. Chargers general manager Tom Telesco already had a track record of drafting players that partook in the event. But him and the evaluators really took advantage of this one in particular, as the team went on to select five players that they had the chance to watch and meet with. Wide receiver Josh Palmer, tight end Tre’ McKitty, offensive tackle Brenden Jaimes, running back Larry Rountree III and safety Mark Webb all participated in the 2021 Senior Bowl. That marks 21 Senior Bowl participants that Los Angeles has either signed or drafted since 2017. The other 16? G Dan Feeney, Indiana – 2017 S Rayshawn Jenkins, Miami – 2017 DB Desmond King, Iowa – 2017 DE Isaac Rochell, Notre Dame – 2017 LS Cole Mazza, Alabama – 2017 DT Justin Jones, NC State – 2018 K Michael Badgley, Miami – 2018 LB Uchenna Nwosu, USC – 2018 C Scott Quessenberry, UCLA – 2018 LB Drue Tranquill, Notre Dame – 2019 S Nasir Adderley, Delaware – 2019 QB Justin Herbert, Oregon — 2020 RB Joshua Kelley, UCLA — 2020 S Alohi Gilman, Notre Dame — 2020 WR K.J. Hill, Ohio State — 2020 Telesco stuck to his guns this year, bringing in good football players that are also good people, tough, competitive and fit the culture of what he wants them to be both on and off the field. chargerswire.usatoday.com/2021/05/02/2021-reeses-senior-bowl-los-angeles-chargers-nfl-draft/

We could take the ST off the field during play, and have a better ST than last year.
