Gates is a shadow of the player he was at his peak. Would he play for the vet’s minimum at this stage? Maybe so, but based on his production in 2018, that would be warranted. PR is coming off of one of his best seasons and will be supporting a household of 11, and will be supporting that in addition to the charitable foundations for many years after the NFL paychecks stop coming in. Will he accept a below-market deal to give the team a better shot at the Lombardi? Yes, I have no doubt he will, but the idea that he should / will take a voluntary pay cut after his 2019 season would be unprecedented (including St. Thomas of San Mateo), and it shouldn’t be viewed as he doesn’t want to win bad enough to take a voluntary pay-cut unless one is Carnac the Magnificent and can guarantee a Super Bowl win if he takes the pay-cut. A marginally better chance isn’t enough of a reason to do so for a professional athlete with a limited career span. Any player should do what they feel is the best for them. I have never had an issue with that. My point is that some players, after earning financial security, become far more interested in winning than money. Pure speculation on my part, but my guess is Brady is not in it for the money anymore, it is all about legacy now. I used Gates merely as an example. I have no idea if he has managed his earnings well, or not. I do know he is at the end, and lacks that Championship......which I am certain he wants. I am certain he will join a very elite group of players that never managed to win the Championship. Gates was our most clutch receiver the past month and a half of the season and playoffs, so if he is a shell of what he used to be and was our best receiver those weeks I'll take it and try not to remember how unstoppable he was when younger and not live in the past. Sign the man!

I agree with ChargingBolts, he made some big plays down the stretch last year. The question is - why not bring him to camp and let him compete?
If he can beat out the young guys, keep him ........... if not, give him a fond farewell filled with thanks.

I don't think that Gates has any desire to be at training camp at this very late stage of his career. I could see a possible after-training camp signing similar to 2018 or an in-season signing should the need arise.

Rivers is ranked#6 overall, Tier 1 QB. Not bad for a late hand clapper. Honestly, I don't know how Brees is a 3 while Rivers is a 6.
2017 to 2018 tier change for Rivers:

Honestly you don't ? Cuz I do. The rankings are not based on performances 10 years ago. Here's what they had to say about Brees:
