What no welcome thread for the huge reach in the 3rd. Trey Pipkins, Sioux Falls, D-II. The resume of a 6th or 7th rounder in the 3rd. Does this go down as another Watt, Tuerk pick? Can TT assess oline men? We’ve now gone Delaware in the 2nd and Sioux Falls in the 3rd. Someone send an ambulance to the Emperor’s temporary palace so far 5 years in TT has proven he sucks at assessing Olinemen. This is a huge reach. Even if the kid is decent it is a premium pick so he's suppose to be 'decent'. looks like a project for multiple years before we see the result. 3rd and 4th rd picks are picks you 'hope' develop into starters......but 'must' become depth at the very minimum. Seems like Pipkins fits this perfectly........ I get you do not like the pick, but it seems like a very shrewd pick by TT and staff.

Interesting: Pipkins grew from 5’11” to 6’6” over a four month period between his junior and senior years in high school, but he only put on about 15 pounds during that time to weigh 235 pounds.. He had never played oline before that senior season. His Mom played basketball at University of Iowa and he grew up playing hoops. The very late growth spurt helps explain his D-2 status after graduation. What ? I would argue that has absolutely nothing to do with it. Recruiters will deliberately dismiss your early years and focus on your senior year. What is his size TODAY, not a year and half ago. I am almost living proof of this. Recruited after my senior year, and I had only ever played my senior year ! I only picked up about 2 inches, but I was close to that 15 pounds.

First, I guess you destroyed woodeye so you could turn into him, and his Watt OL special busts. Second, and more important, I want you to follow very closely here.........I hope the player goes All_pro. It only helps our team. But lets be crystal clear here, he was completely and utterly overdrafted. Like, 2 Rounds type of early reach overdrafted. Not the end of the world, they obviously targeted the guy. You like a guy, you target a guy, go get your guy. It's pretty obvious they fell in love with him at his East West Shrine game. No problem, draft him. But he was an early bird special. Of that there is no talky talk.

During his senior year, he first started playing offensive line and was learning to function in his 6’6” 235 pound body, let alone giving a glimpse of what his potential was as an offensive lineman. I guarantee you that the gangly Iowa kid Pipkins was on zero D1 team’s horizon before and after his senior season. If he was in California, I could see him going to CC for a couple of years if he wanted to be offered by a D1 program. Instead, he went with the only offer he had.

Of that there is no talky talk. First off, I did nothing to Woodmod but criticize his 1st rd belief in Rapp......and even then all I said was Rapp is 2nd rd talent. Boltnut destroyed Rapp, not me. Woodmod has chosen TPB's as his place, his choice, I had nothing to do with it. I suppose most would agree with your analysis on Pipkins being drafted early. The pre-draft debate would be centered on just what round Pipkins' talent rated. The internal debate during the draft is clearly all about 'when' another club might be interested enough to draft him, and impacting that would be how many OT's are off the board. My guess is the Bolts had a 3rd to 4th rd rating on Pipkins, and as the draft unfolded they felt strongly that he doesn't get to their 4th rd pick, so they took him in the 3rd. Whenever someone uses the term 'reach' they are simply applying their personal rating/evaluation of a player. You feel that Pipkins is a 5th rd pick based off of what you posted, the Bolts felt he was a 3rd, at this point neither of you is more 'correct'...... I like the pick, think it was shrewd drafting.

Pipkins is as much a reach as Lamp is a bust at this point.

The current draft team ( TT, Spanos & scouts, Lynn & coaching staff) who are in their 3rd year together have drafted OLs Lamp (injured), Feeney (starter, albeit struggled as a soph), Tevi (reserve who started when #1 RT Barksdale had emotional breakdown) and Quisenberry (backup C/G). Not a stellar record but not exactly "sucks". Trey impressed at the Shrine game vs quality college opponents. Very athletic 6-6, 305 OTs who are bright, quick learners, who don't allow sacks aren't all that common. I prefer to opine that Pipkins unique, modest background may have allowed LAC to acquire a top talent at a bargain price.

I didn't get to attend the Shrine practices & game where Pipkins made a big impression. Rumors were that LAC wasn't the only interested team. Pretty sure TT made the right move based on his info. Given that, I'd have made the same choice.

Most of his snaps came against Mathieu Betts (Laval University, Quebec). He had some snaps against Malik Carney (UDFA) and Cortez Broughton (Chargers 6th). Both beat him once with inside moves. He had several snaps against Jordan Brailford (Redskins 7th). But Brailford beat him twice (badly) and then the West team covered Pipkins with a TE for the remainder of Brailford/Pipkins snaps. Am I un-neccessarily being a Negative Nancy...? Maybe. But moreso, I think we need to curb our enthusiasm about Pipkins until we see what he can do against NFL caliber pass rushers. This guy is a raw prospect. I do like his 2nd level blocking and he looks comfortable out in space. But he's not going to be asked to protect PR's blindside any time soon. I have more confidence in Lamp at OT than Pipkins at this point.

And I think the FO is banking on being able to more easily mold that rawness than someone who already has bad habits ingrained in him. It's a boom or bust pick. But at least it's a low 3rd round pick. I do like that he has certain traits that can carry over to being a good tackle like knee bending.

Others in attendance who liked what they saw of Pipkins included Paul Guilamette - Trey was a "Shrine Game All Star" and Emory Hunt, in interview" I didn't see you lose a single rep" in practice. Apparently he wasn't looking at the right moments. Betts wouldn't surprise me, he reportedly beat everyone he faced. No doubt somewhat an exaggeration also but I gather that he was an eye opener. I'll go with the Chargers' staff assessment. I have no reason to do otherwise. Actual performance in the coming months will give a stronger basis for fan evals.
