League minimum cost, makes it a throw of the dice with a two dollar bet...... The chances of year 2 are slim. He either performs well, and the Patriots will not pay him starter money, or he underperforms and they don't bring him back.

How did he clear medicals if there are no in person meetings allowed? Not that it matters to your question, which my response is he has become physically depleted by previous injuries. Is he depleted enough to not make the roster is what we all will find out as TC's happen. Speculation about the Pats' motives can be endless.....

I am so grateful that there is actually some FOOTBALL related tidbit of news to discuss instead of politics, pandemics, and protests! Granted, it's the Patriots- first for getting punished for another indiscretion and then for signing a high profile free agent. Does anyone think it's a coincidence that the Cam signing came on the SAME day as the news broke about their punishment for cheating again?I think Belichick waited for this so that the Cam news would dwarf the scandal. He is an evil genius. I guess I wasn't the only one thinking this! This is from an ESPN writer, link below: "We might never know whether Belichick delayed the timing of the Newton signing to coincide with the news that the Patriots had lost a third-round pick from the latest in their series of league investigations,..." www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29380793/grading-cam-newton-move-patriots-little-risk-huge-potential-new-look-patriots-offense

Your speculation that they are using a roster spot on him, and paying him, because he's a bust ?

No one wanted him ? He only wanted a starter job ? There was only back up jobs available ? Once he saw there was no starter offers, he took the Patriot one ? Much deeper background stuff going on.

The only club to offer a contract was the Pats. Moe was pretty dead on......Newton was not highly sought.
