Ok AJ Smith. That might have worked 40 years ago. Creating an adversarial relationship between one of your star players and the front office is a bad idea. Thus far there are no bad guys in this. Why would you want to make Ekeler a sympathetic character both to the media and in the locker room. It isn't about having a hard edge approach, much more about what is fair. Ekeler does not like the offered contract, has little leverage, but decides to ask for permission to seek a trade that would facilitate Ekeler getting the contract he believes he deserves. TT responds 'ok, but if we agree to do that (give permission) then understand our offered contract is no longer available to you. Nothing is free, you want to seek better circumstances, you do it without this contract offer as a fallback position.'The relationship is adversarial to a degree, regardless of tone, is it not? And why is it not being adversarial for a player under contract to ask for permission to seek a trade? TT opened this door when he allowed the 'seek a trade'...... As I posted previously, the answer should have been a simple 'no'...... That is the complete opposite of what Telesco's history is, ESPECIALLY with a player we signed out of college. He does that go ahead and test the market and our contract will be waiting for you if you come back.

Fair to whom? For what?
No its not... smh...
Fair to both sides. Explain to me how it is fair for a player under contract to ask permission to seek a trade, and how just asking that would not create adversarial attitudes. Yes, it is......very much so in some cases. There is a reason agents are hired, right? Sometimes managements numbers match up really close to the players, making a deal quite easy to accomplish. Other times, not so much.....making it adversarial while trying to find acceptable numbers. I'll be happy to. 1. When a player feels he has outperformed his contract. 2. When the player wants to see what the market will bear for his services. 3. When a player is sick of looking at Spanos' face all season every season. 4. When your head coach loses a 27-0 playoff lead. 5. It goes on all the time.

A player under contract wants to be free to shop his services across the league, then take those numbers and throw them in his club's face in negotiations. Nothing fair about that. TT giving permission, and so quickly, seems like there is more going on that we do not see. I love the "When a player feels he has outperformed his contract." angle that keeps getting used. Nobody is saying Ekeler has not performed much better than expected (by either side) during this contract. That is great for the club, and a bit of a rare occurrence. Regardless, we are not talking about last contract, rather it is the next contract that is under discussion here. We have no idea what the numbers exchanged by club and player might be, but Ekeler asking to seek a trade implies they are not acceptable to him, and I would guess by a big amount. I like the 3 years at 10mil/yr, feel it is a very fair offer. Now I understand the player won't like the term, and will seek more term. So 4 years at 8 mil/yr.....he will like that even less. Not a chance I agreed to more term than 4 years. I can hear af crying now......RB's just get screwed......yea, 10 mil a year is just terrible.

Adversarial is a strong term and doesn't fit IMO, but you can use it if you want. Do you really think ANYONE is thinking fairness in the NFL? Players or teams? Not in the slightest... Besides, asking for a trade is just that its "asking". I firmly believe if a GM gets an adversarial attitude toward a player in that instance where there was none before he/she has no business being a GM in the NFL. SDC's AJ Smith comment was spot on.
I get what your saying though.
Nope, fair really is not part of the equation. It tilts League, Club, Player......and even with the NFLPA's creation, it still tilts that order. TT should have simply responded 'no' when asked. AJ operated when control was much more in the players face, but to think that today's owners are not just as committed to control is delusional. The iron fist just has a velvet glove on now. I'm sure that you got the Freak all hot and bothered visualizing this.

Tillery resigned with the Raiders. For peanuts. His lazy ass will resurface. It's always been clear that he had the ability to play the game at a high level but not the drive or passion.

Wow. He got his price. The day before Tilman Fertitta who owns the Rockets said he was drawing the line at $5.6B. Amazing price. The Broncos sold for $4.65B a year ago. I guess those buyers got a deal.

I guess those buyers got a deal. I think the assets include the NFL team rights, all facilities, real estate, debt, and anything else going along with it. Beyond the NFL rights, there is a wide difference in valuation between franchises. Years ago, I think the Washington and Dallas franchises were among the most valuable in the NFL, and much of that had to do with their facilities. Little had to do with the teams performance on the field in recent years.

The Cowboys are the most valuable as “America’s team” but also because Jerry Jones somehow managed to retain 100% of the merchandising rights to Cowboys. Normally those rights are shared among the teams like TV money. Jerry also owns the stadium right? Maybe Snyder did as well.
