I don't quite understand this move by TT. A lot of cap wasted for a guy who most likely never sees the field - that money could have gone towards a valuable FA addition. We go as far as Rivers takes us. As much as I dislike Bortles, he would have been a much better value for the price point at which the Rams acquired him. Call me unimpressed by TT in FA so far. Need another great draft to improve this off season. Maybe Lynn thinks Tyrod could actually be our QB of the future?

Then color me unimpressed with TT as a whole

The Chargers project Tyrod to be a valuable bridge QB.
Following River's retirement, and as the Chargers settle in to Kroenke's Palace, Tyrod will re-sign with us.
Don't lose track of the fact that Tyrod is a fashion icon, and likes the bright lights of LA.
Continuity...it's priceless.

Could this signing mean that the Chargers might use a mid-round pick on a QB they think might have some promise to be a starter? Since Taylor is only signed for two years, that would give the rookie some time to learn and develop, and we would not have to worry about using a rookie if Rivers had to miss some time. Could be. It could also be that AL sees Tyrod as a possible successor to PR. A mobile, playoff experienced QB who does not make mistakes. After two years, reassess.

You draft the year BEFORE Rivers' last year. Then you have TT to start TC and the season if necessary...when appropriate, insert new guy. Then pray.

It is a good idea to watch NO with Brees, ahead of Rivers in the QB cycle of life. They retained Bridgewater. There is plenty of talk one of these late round 1 QBs being scooped, the LAC being one of several candidates to do the scooping, Personally I am hoping for it all to lead to the proverbial Charger trade down, for more picks.

Personally dont care.As stated before we go where Rivers goes and would have rather used that much money on someone who would actually see the field and possibly help in our quest for the Lombardi.

It's much better than spending a draft pick on a quarterback at this stage IMO. I agree with Pac in that you draft a "replacement" one year before PR is expected to retire. If PR goes down for the season, most of us agree that the season is over. However, Tyrod is more than capable of keeping the season alive for a few weeks should PR go down with a short-term injury, and IMO the smart move is to have such a proven capable quarterback in the wings when you have a 38-year-old QB, even one as "indestructible" as PR has proven to be over the years.

And when is this ? The Chargers simply cannot allow themselves to be caught flat footed as the transition to Kroenke's Palace occurs. That would be disastrous. Need no to get hung up on two years for Tyrod. He can be re-signed whenever/if ever it is needed.

Nowhere in the foreseeable future barring a catastrophic injury or a sudden downturn in play, so no need to waste a draft pick on a QB in 2019. I don't believe that you and I are on a different page, Wood. Unless the retirement is forced by an injury, I have a feeling that PR will give TT, the Spanos' and the coaching staff a heads up when PR feels that he'll be heading into his final season, so having a backup QB like Tyrod is ideal in the current setting.

That would be perfect. Hopefully Rivers ages well and gives us several more quality years.

Great post where we are on exactly the same page. For about a year or more it has dawned on me. PR has already given the team a timeline, and every year he revisits it with them. That is the only way Telesco drafts the way he does. No first round QB's because it does not fit Rivers timeline retirement.
