As much as I’ve been critical of Staley, I have to agree. Consistency in winning and getting to the playoffs is one of the key indicators you look for in a HC. If everything else is stable (no locker room drama, etc.) then another PO appearance probably means he stays. Esp since Spanos seems happy with just making the playoffs... I think it’s a valuable indicator. But it isn’t the only one. In this past season we saw the Chargers be generally inconsistent and not play well against good teams. They had some luck. Over time that performance reverts to the mean, and if it continues, Staley will be fired.

The Chargers' inconsistency could not have been related to their massive talent loss from injuries, could it?

I could see an owner that was put in that corner firing both, which should have been the path taken. I do not see an owner choosing HC over GM.

But it could also have been due in part to the same coaches that made bad decisions and lost when the team was healthy. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Or did you like the O and D in the playoffs?

Owners aren’t inherently wise, they’re just inherently rich.

If you want to ignore the massive drop in talent outside of several starting positions, then sure. But in reality no. The most injured team in the NFL made the playoffs. Overall I think that speaks well for the HC. That stuff aside, I'm looking forward to 2023. A new OC, QB coach, DC, DB coach, ILB coach, QC coach clearly point to a desire to make some changes. I expect one or more playoff wins.

The 3rd one is still there, and the previous two retired.

There are local stories of the Rooney's thinking of breaking the streak with Tomlin. He has never had a losing record, and how he got this horrible offense this year to 9-8 I don't know. We'll see if its just the papers making stories or not. The year they won their last Superbowl a lot of people including me said that was Cowher's team. Just a winning record sometimes isn't enough, and they like their champ culture here....................
