Are we happy with this draft ! ? ! Jimbo with the seat at the head of the table. Hortiz killing it. 9 on a 10 scale. Thus far, the Chargers have come as close to comprehensively solving all their needs as reasonably possible. Bring on the UDFAs, UFAs. Take good care y'all. Overall, I’m quite happy with the draft. I would have made a different strategic decision in round 1 but the path they ultimately chose was completely rational and entirely supportable. The one reach pick, to me, was Still in 5. We’ll see how Eboigbe develops. But with one or two exceptions, I’m glad they generally stayed close to the consensus board or got surplus value in the pick. I’d give Hortiz a B+ for this draft on paper, which is really quite good considering how bad most first drafts are for new GMs. We’ll see how things play out but I fully expect they grabbed at least a few new starters and depth to fill out the roster and compete.

UDFA Small School Sammy 6'8 355 pound OT. Basically he is the size of the school. Holy hell. Where are we getting these monstrosities.
Oh that's right. They must be so we can continue to throw 64% of the time.
REACT AS I HARD EDUCATED YOU ALL TO THE NEW PLAN AND SCHEME !!! REACT REACT REACT

Good to see! Competition drives success. Interesting note about the Chargers WRs, they have to be decent blockers.
Every body builds D to defend the pass. How sweet of them. We will throw the ball, after we punch them in the mouth a few times.

1st down throw it to the RB. Second down throw it to the TE. 3rd down throw it to WR. 4th down drop back to pass again and look like foolish suck sandwiches. Maybe we'll run it 4 series from now.
Folks, you can wrap your lips around that crap and kiss it goodbye. I told you in January. Kneel hardcore.

Interesting UDFA list. Including three blocking TE's.
Karsen Barnhart, Michigan, G
Barnhart is reunited with Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles after spending 2019 to 2023 with the Wolverines. He was a two-year starter under Harbaugh and was a Second-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2023.

Harbaugh's Michigan had the most players drafted this year. 13. The most in school history too.
Trust the Process

Competition is good, but I believe talent drives success..... I can't disagree, completely. It seldom materializes in a vacuum.
All these kids are talented to some degree. We're looking for fighters who play team Harbaugh ball.

Talent shows up on game day, which is when the player faces the true competition, and is measured accordingly. Harbaugh is setting out to change the culture, and he seems like the type of personality that can achieve such change. Looking forward to seeing an in your face type of OL group.....as well as a change in Bosa's determination.

I'm not a college football super fan and therefore not very knowledgeable about a lot of the draft prospects.
I was slightly surprised by our first three picks, just meaning I predicted a different direction based off mocks and media and my own worthless gut feeling. And with the exception of Rice, I had no idea who any of our later picks were until after I looked them up.
But my point is this- after proper consideration I am very happy with the players we drafted! The Chargers made fitting and appropriate choices and exercised good decision making and seemed to stay true to a very mature draft strategy. I can really see a "we have at a need at X and it gets fixed by drafting XYZ" without overdrafting (often getting value of a player expected to go higher) and not making any head-scratcher choices.
Even some of the initially puzzling picks made more sense after I read about dots connecting them back to the Bolts like the CB from Maryland, Tarheeb Still, who many consider our "worst" choice in this draft; but if NaVorro Bowman (who is now on our defensive coaching staff) pounded the table for him after coaching him at Maryland for two years then I feel much better about this kid!
And that bowling ball of a RB from Troy- none of us ever heard of him before, but he looks like he'll be a great asset in a RBC!
And don't get me started on Brenden Rice. I posted about him long before he was drafted and am still mystified that he wasn't picked until the seventh round. I've looked for an explanation and NO ONE knows why.
My last thought will be on our first pick. No, I did not see this coming although the signs in hindsight were crystal clear. Yes, we really took a Right Tackle with the fifth overall pick. (So much for that positional value myth!) I was bothered by this because I am not a fan of taking players and moving them to a different position than they played in college. But I've heard a few pundits speak to that and make comments that Joe Alt is special and (while not ideal) moving to the right side will not be an issue for him. So yay! And the big-picture view of OTs over WRs was the correct one as evidenced by how this draft played out over the first few rounds! Sure, casual fans like me were hoping for the more exciting play-making weapon and not a big ugly, but looking back I think it was the smart move, made by smart people.

Do I look like NO ONE to you ??!?!?!?! You have come to the right place for answers. Answers that NO ONE can give you. Not ESPN, NFL Network NO ONE !!! Let's dive in. How does someone rated day 2 fall into the 7th round ? No off the field trouble. No injuries. No nut case. How ? In a very deep WR pool he slipped through. All the teams that wanted WR's had already grabbed theirs. So when their next rounds came about, they were hunting other positions. I know we were up this guys butt (I know I would be). Pro days, combine, etc. I hope he ends up being one of our stories for the ages. I want to hear other teams say how did we not get that guy.
