You anti-4th-downers crack me up. So myopic, regurgitating only the misses. Where were you in the Browns game, where punting on 4th-and-not-short from our 20- something would very likely have ended up in a loss? Where were you "GET THE POINTS!" people earlier in this very same turds game, when we converted on 4th to go on to get a touchdown? Oh yeah, let's just keep harping on the 3 easy points we gave the turds in a 3 point loss, and totally overlook the 4 point positive swing that even got us to OT. Hilarious. You have to factor the good with the bad on the aggressive 4th down decisions. Me personally, I don't agree with this particular decision, because it was a very long 1 yard (really 2), and then the play call was trash. But it's not going to turn me into one of you anti-4th-downers. I think if you're expecting to see Staley suddenly tend towards the conservative decisions, you're just setting yourself up for more teeth gnashing. Might as well adjust. You sound upset, obtuse, and you assume too much... I'm not "anti-4th down"... I'm anti 4th down on our own 18 AND like you said, calling a trash play. Staley has left lots of points and potential wins on the field with his idiotic decisions. Try to disparage me all you want, the simple fact of the matter is we are out of the playoffs and leaving points on the field is a LARGE part of that reason. I am definitely obtuse, I figured that would be common knowledge by now. My post wasn't intended to be personal or directed at you specifically, though it's clear after reflection that my quoting you and my phrasing conveyed as much. Sorry for that. The obtuse thing again. It was a response to a contingent that is full of vitriol for decisions that did not succeed. That group seems to overlook the successful decisions. Maybe that is me assuming too much -- and that in reality that contingent recognizes all those successful decisions too. I kinda doubt it though. Point being, if we failed on the 4th-and-not-short attempt from our own 20-something against the Browns, we would have lost that game, and there would be similar vitriol about how idiotic that decision was. If we failed on 4th down against the turds in the first half TD drive, more vitriol and idiotic decision lambasting. I don't see balancing reflection on those from many folks. I'm a firm believer in analytics. The numbers, by some sources I've seen, say when faced with 4th and 1 FROM ANYWHERE ON THE FIELD, going for it has a better statistical outcome than bringing out special teams. I read a great article that analyzed every 4th down decision in the much maligned Chiefs game, and they were all correct by the numbers. Every one. I'd link it, but I suspect not many are interested in it. Now, I've seen many folks who say analytics be damned. You have to have a feel for the game. How's this for feel of the game: we have Herbert and a great supporting cast on one side of the ball. We have a shitshow on the other side of the ball that can't stop a nose bleed. I know which side I trust more when that decision is needed. It seems Staley does too. The reality as I see it: Staley isn't going anywhere. He isn't going to make a dramatic shift in his belief in analytics or his aggressiveness. Life for us fans will probably be less stressful by accepting that, and striving to also recognize the decisions that worked. I'm rambling now. Probably too sober.

I just want balance that's all... Clearly we seem to have a better chance than most in converting on the analytic gambles, I get it. But it could be argued we lost the KC game with the exact same decisions and history repeating itself with the Raiders, bye bye playoffs. I'm hoping for a much better year number 2 from Staley.

I have already destroyed the 4th down garbage weeks and weeks and weeks ago.
Now here we are sitting at home for the playoffs.
Funny how I called the end result, huh. ?

Funny that we may be upset with having a coach who is willing to trust his players and go for it on 4th and short when it is presented instead of Lynn who would punt on 4th & 1 from midfield and "trust" that the D will make a stop. Considering that there was a lot of people here banging their drums for us to hire Urban Meyer I am quite happy that we picked St

The numbers are just that and don’t take into account all of the variables present at any time in a game. These aren’t math problems. I do like Staley’s agressiveness but hated the play call on 4th and 1-1/2 from the 18 given who we are, who they are, where we were and what was at stake.
